First for any who do not know. An rsc is a file that contains resources(icons, images, music) for byond excutables(dmbs). They are either downloaded when someone first enters a hosted byond world, or at a later time which is designated by the producer of the source code.
Back in 02 I asked if I could create an Rsc Extractor to extract files from the rsc file. Both Lummox JR and Tom said it wasn't a good idea. But just last month I talked to crispy who said it was perfectly legal to create such a tool.
So I've been working on an RscExtractor and it is near alpha release. I do not want to release it to the public if it will gain me a bad rep. You know the one who unleashed the new hell of riping.
I ask for your opinions but please be gentel.

I wouldn't want to release it if I were you but if you are going to release it at all, I suggest only giving it to people who have a fairly good reputation as a developer(preferably programmer since rsc's contain the icons and such, as you said and I doubt a non-programmer could make a remake or something of that game). I would also only release it to people that you think wouldn't cause trouble with it seeing as how any good programmer/person wouldn't want to rip icons/music/etc from a rsc anyways.

The thing is, everyone who wouldn't really abuse it already knows how to extract those resources.
So the only people who would really use your tool are people who would steal icons and such. So there's no point. Why do you want to release it anyway? What are you trying to achieve? | |

The only postive effect it has is getting back lost icons. That does not outway the negative effect of icons being ripped.

I agree with the rest, releasing such a program would be used mostly for evil. I have thought about creating such a device myself, but have not bothered as of yet.

I would absolutely LOVE to have an Rsc extractor to play around with.
Still, I wouldn't say it's a good idea to release one ever. Go ahead and make it but don't pass it out. If someone does have a problem and loses their game, I think it would be better if he asked someone else to rip the resources on his behalf, to keep the extractors out of circulation. That way you have the benefit of one without introducing the negative aspects. | |

Don't release it. It'll bring much harm to the BYOND community.
However, if you're going to release it, at least put a price-tag on it. That way, most rippers wont have an easy way to get their hands on the extractor. If I were you, use it for services, like what some people suggested below (retrieving lost icons and whatnot). Charge for your services too. >=D | |
If you do anything with it, which I suggest you don't, charge for your services like D4RK3 54B3R suggested, but do not give the extracter out PERIOD. And to tip things off, only do it for people you know/trust.
