If do release it to anyone at all, put something in the code which causes it to stop working after some period. That way, anyone who gets one, and who shouldn't have one, can only do so much with it before it 'expires'. I wouldn't suggest letting it sit for '30 days' or something on their computer; I'd have it silently check if the date was past a certain hard coded date, and then silentlys stop working, and stop working in a way which setting a clock back wouldn't fix.

Release it, and I will have you killed <.<
It's hard enough trying to keep icons safe already. Why would you want to give someone a tool to steal them easier. Not everyone knows about RSC extraction. Releasing such a tool would result in the ripping of peoples art in an instant. It would be pointless for spriters to make authentic orignal icons. They would be stolen in one fifth of the time they are now =/ |

Remember save-file editors? What good came of them? Actually, I often used save-file editors for debugging. |
How could you use an RSC extractor for debugging?
Steal your own icons to see how quickly people can steal them from you? (Should put a smiley here. I'm not being serious or anything) <.< |
You could use them to make sure things are saving properly but I am pretty sure you can program things to make sure.
|
Why need a RSC Extractor? Unless people are too lazy to rip icons, theres already a way (best to keep quiet about) out there without needing one. Though, a few other files reside inside the RSC file, better to be safe.
Charging money for the RSC Extractor is a good plan but as some said, don't give it out. A couple could pirate such software and BAM, piracy troubles. P.S.: I use save-file editors for research now in days. |
I can't see any possible good that would come from releasing such a tool. It's like asking if you should release a house-lock bypass mechanism. Only thieves will need it. I am not aware of any instance of a developer losing all resources and needing to deconstruct the rsc. Even the rare occasion where it *might* happen in no way balances out the enormous abuse that would occur. Do we really need another disincentive to the development of original resources?
Limited distribution is not really a viable solution since the people who want it for abuse are likely to widely distribute and bypass any security measures. Offering your services to assist legitimate developers in recovering resources sounds like a much better idea and one much more likely to earn prestige from grateful devs instead of scorn for ushering in a new wave of rsc ripping. |
Didn't something happen with Silk Wizard losing all the files to that Dragon Warrior game of his? There's a possible situation that someone could use it in(Silk), to get all the icons, music, etc back, except for the code, which isn't in the rsc as most people are telling me. I think Silk Wizard would be able to create his own if he needed to, however.
|
He probably could, and that situation WOULD be beneficial if he didn't happen to send a much earlier work to a friend of his to look over. From what I remember, all that he has left is the core battle system and would have to rewrite every NPC script, recreate maps and redo every cutscene he made. The shock of the setback did more damage than the actual loss, but it was still enough to kill it.

32 Comments O.O holy ****!!!
I only expected what, 3 the most. As for the issue at hand. I have decided not to release it to the public, obviously. How ever, if any developer needs any help in recovering files they may have lost from crashes, viruses, or just windows use. I would be glad to use this Rsc Extractor tool and help them out. Thank you for your responses. |
yea, but wow Airjoe I didn't know she was your sister. http://developer.byond.com/forum/ index.cgi?action=message_read&id=199908&forum=8&view=1
So I started too look up the past when you mentioned that pet demo thing. YEEKS! http://developer.byond.com/forum/ index.cgi?action=message_read&id=35552&forum=4&view=0 I hate my past self, I think its the worst kind of me. |
It's the worst part of all of us, Green Lime. But you have to look through the windshield, not the rear view mirror. Or something like that.
