How would you do tree climbing like in assassin creed for a 2D game?

Personally I would program a tree climbing system very carefully. Is not Enzio a ninja? Wake up people. The most unique feature I can imagine with climbing trees are splinters. Assassin's Creed III lets you climb shitty trees instead of buildings but his chakra control is really bad and he doesn't even announce what attacks he's using. | |
