That one obviously depends on the implementation. With a conventional one, probably not, but other implementations of hitting people in games exist. At any case, this thread isn't mainly about stabbing as it is.
I simply pointed out the correct way to prevent misleading, but incidentally the OP was actually looking for "How would I find out if a player is BEHIND a mob?", to quote the topic's title and his question, so typically you'd answer that question instead of another ("how do I program backstabbing someone?").
Lastly, obviously you can add a distance check to that if desired, that's beside the point. =P
