I have just been insulted today. A glove was taken off and slapped my face. Hedgemistress closed a thread I had made which talked about a petition. A petition that has most of BYOND. For some reason they think that by charging extra fees now for things that were once free BYOND will attract new people. If that isn't the most crock pot idea I have ever heard then I don't know what is. This petition has about 725 people signing it. On byond right now they're is about 900 people playing. They may have thousands of keys but most of them are double/triple/non-used keys now. I said that most of BYOND agreas that the pager needs to be left alone. You can keep this member page, the member blogs, hell, take the member avatars but leave the pager alone. That's all we ask. If any of you agrea with this view, then click on this link http://www.petitiononline.com/byond/ . If you don't then don't come on just flaming me. If you want to disagrea but nice, orderly, and have facts. I will proably only get pro member feedback on this because most non-members are just going to ignore all of this, but we'll see how all these pro members are once the smoke clears and the trials wear out, we'll see.
The pager is the sole reason Dantom needs cash, so you can't leave it, dumbass.

" A glove was taken off and slapped my face. "

Burn. Seriously. Nobody even likes you. Go back to your cardboard box, in your bargain-bin charity jumper.

I mean, if you're that poor that you can't afford 8 quid...idiot.
Resistance is Futile.
I'm sorry, but the pager is DEFINITELY staying member only. It's been stated and restated by many people.

The fact of the matter is, the pager was sucking up so much bandwith. By limiting it to members only, it cuts out 90% of that "JOIN DBZGT ZETA REMODIFIED ULTIMA 72 NOW OR I WILL BAN U (sta.)" spam. Without that spam, less money is being taken away from the TWO people who are keeping BYOND alive by funding.

I hope you understand.
"On byond right now they're is about 900 people playing."

People don't play 24/7. Australian players , English players, Polish players will not play when American players play BYOND.

Bon: 'stfu'.
1) She closed it because it has been overdisucssed.
2) Get over it, you can't change anything, all we are, are little bugs, and dantom is the big giant man (or boy) that is at the picknick and we've been eating his food way too long.
Well Elation, we have a question for you, how old are you? Really, answer me that. Im 14, can't get a job and parents won't give me cash for online games.
You people are acting like greedy little ignorant brats who care for noone but themselves. You know those 700+ signatures? I'd bet all my wordly posessions that the majority of those are the same people signing over and over.

Seriously, grow up. In the real world people need money to survive. Dantom isn't some rich guy who can keep BYOND going without asking for anything. BYOND has been losing money for about 7+(I think it's like 10) years. So now, when they ask for a bit of money, it's too hard to give them it? But then, not only is it too hard, you have to go and complain like greedy children. Grow up.
I'm 16, Bon.

Did you get any money for your 14th birthday?

Was it more than 15 dollars?
Oh, and about age. I too am 14, and somehow, magically, I was able to pay for it. Know how? It's called birthdays and holidays. I won't believe that you don't get money from those. Is it so hard to save 15 dollars?
Yeah, it is hard. Maybe your parents let you go play online games but many don't. They don't like instant messanger, they don't like paying for online games, and you know what, my parents won't give me pay pal and I doubt I'll get to mail the money. I would love to pay to help BYOND but you know what, I really can't do that! You act like we do this because we can but don't want to. It's the other way around. We can't but we want to. We wanna help byond but byond has to figure out other ways around this. Perhaps a limit on posts per minute?
It's not BYOND's fault that you can't pay. If you can't figure out anyway to pay, then it's your own fault. Don't complain.
Yeah. If you can't pay doesn't mean it should be made free just for you. Dantom would go in the red, just because one player couldn't page his bwuddies?

Take the pressure, you can ride the storm!
There are so many ways to get $15 dollors, I wasn't even going to subscribe to byond someone done it for me to help the byond community and good for them! but theres always christmas, birthdays, easter or judgement day or something where you can get money... For me loosing pager is nothing, "msn","AIM","Yahoo" are all much better of talking to other people.
Stop bitching you damned pansy. Hell, I made $15 in the time it took you to make that damn post. Get a job.
700 players is a very small percentage of the active, unique players on BYOND.
ok guyz cood u plz sine my petition to make evrything at mcdonalds free/???forwardslash? i dont think its fare that thy chrge muney for the servece thy suply becuz i'm a thirteen year old dummaz who THINKS AN ONLINE PETITION WILL CHANGE SOMETHING PERFECTLY LEGITIMATE AND FAIR.

Screw off.
If you dont like what Bon is saying, THEN DONT GET INVOLVED! and all you people saying your 16, 17, and 18, thats bullshit, isnt it time for you people to get your lazy asses off the computer and get your own jobs?
For some reason they think that by charging extra fees now for things that were once free BYOND will attract new people.

Not quite true. What they think is that by charging the extra fees BYOND will be able to cover its costs (without the creators having to pay huge amounts of money out-of-pocket in addition to maintaining and improving the software and the Forum, Hub, etc.). Net gain or net loss in the number of users is beside the point, though I expect that in the long run, there will indeed be a net gain in the number of users.

As for the petition, well, kudos for taking the initiative, but I doubt it will make a difference. The membership program wasn't a decision the BYOND staff just pulled out of its hat... it was pondered, debated, and revised a great deal before ever being made public.

This blog system is a case in point -- it didn't just hatch from an egg; rather, it was deliberately constructed as a feature that would simultaneously offer something of value to BYOND members, and showcase the various strengths and quirks of the people in the BYOND community, whether players or programmers.

In short, I sympathize with your trouble in coming up with a membership fee, but an argument rooted in a minor personal inconvenience probably isn't going to win out against an opposing argument based on rational analysis -- analysis, I should add, that took your argument into account from the start. :)
You have not been insulted, and no gloves were removed. All threads having to do with the petition are being closed... because the petition is pointless (for reasons Gughunter went over)... and because 700 people or even 1,000 is not most of the people on BYOND... it's not even a majority... it is a drop in the bucket.

This is the really "telling thing" about the petition is that it revolves around misconceptions (like 700 people is "most of BYOND", or that it's $15 a week or day, or that BYOND is going pay to play, or that BYOND Staff are responsible for and profit from subscriber games) and/or outright lies to spread its message... that should tell you right off the bat that it's off base, shouldn't it?

No, adding pay features won't attract huge numbers of new people... but... BYOND already attracts huge numbers of new people all on its own. This is part of the problem. Yes! Attracting huge numbers of people can be a PROBLEM for a system, if the system wasn't built for huge numbers of people.

The pager is a case in point. Dan and Tom (once again I stress, the "BYOND company" is two people, two regular people like you or me) were happy to take on the costs of running the pagers... but they didn't plan on having multiple THOUSANDS of people on the system at once (again, I tell you: 700 people is nothing. BYOND has waaaay more than that.)... and so they're unprepared to face the financial burden that's looming before them.

So yeah... this might slow growth. But without extra sources of income, growth must slow or the system will break... the extra income from memberships should allow the system to continue.

The choice here isn't "Keep pagers free or charge."

The choice here is, "Find a way to cut bandwidth costs and bring in money, or give up running BYOND."... Dantom chose to do the former. Would you rather have them do the latter?
