darkness......overlays?

I have a balck, half transparent 32 X 32 icon. is there a way to apply it to every thing as an overlay or something similar.

it is to simulate darkness and so I would really appreciate some help.

Use an area, set the layer to something very high, use mouse_opacity to remove it from blocking everything underneath from being clicked.

Covering client.screen with it would be the most straightforward method. Just create one object with a screen_loc of "SOUTHWEST TO NORTHEAST" and add to to the screen.
