Day #1
Day 1

I am a big fan of tower defense and grand strategy games, they actually take up the majority of the time I spend playing games. So since the RPG's team has been busy, I decided I could take a break and try something different.

This idea began in November, since then I have written/sketched quite a few ideas and during the last couple days I finally began to write code. I find it is a lot easier to continue something when you can really observe what you imagined.

Day #2
Day 2

What is this?
It is a RTS taking place in Space. You use asteroids as bases and build installations to grow and defend your colony. Gather resources, buy upgrades, extend territory, you know; all the fixtures of a grand strategy game.

It plays out how I imagine humans may leave Earth and colonize Space.
Day #3
Day 3

What's going on in the screenshots?
In the screenshots there is a capital from which drones fly out, build & deliver resources in the forms of minerals, fuel and people to the installation dubbed a "habitat". This habitat then creates credits which show up beside it's name in brackets.

What is the next step?
My next step is adding a few new structures to provide different functions (mining, energy generation, etc) and balancing their numbers.

Day #4
Day 4

What I love so far is the fact that it just goes on and grows, you earn more credits as the economy functions and when you over extend, you see places start to fail and shut down until a drone finally finds the time to repair an installation.

Brainstorm
If I could make this a MMORTS, it would be a whole lot of fun as players compete for territory in space. I've already written a system which creates a "limitless" universe, but what I am finding tricky is the CPU it would take to run every colony live.

I could ramble on for a lot longer, but i'll just leave it as it is until I finish another update and share a few more ideas. I enjoy writing about the things I make, so i'll post more details soon even if it's not a fully polished idea.

The aesthetics have been an afterthought, just used images I found in a Google search and a little Photoshop. So i'm sure that if I finish, the game won't look like this at all. Hopefully you get the idea regardless.

If you know any similar games I'd love to know them, I found; http://old.casualcollective.com/#games/the_space_game helped me make a few changes before I got to facing the challenge itself in coding.
Does this use BYOND?

Yah, 100% BYOND from the ground up.
Than that makes it even more nice that you did this with BYOND. Really good look for the BYOND engine.
I'm also very impressed with this, as RTS games are my favourite as well. I look forward to original artwork and a game i may end up playing. :)
When people put the effort in, they can actually make a BYOND game look so good.
*please be single player, please be single player*
Haven't gotten to do as much as i'd like to in the last couple days however, so far I made it possible to zoom in & out using two keyboard keys (I may add the mouse wheel when I get my hands on a actual mouse and i'm able to test it)

Now possible to build different buildings by clicking to bring up a quick menu.

A minimap to offset the limited view range when you're focused & once you've built on an asteroid, it's possible to move that asteroid like a chess piece.

Now i'm just playing this and trying to see where I should take it. I'm split on what might be fun, so i'm trying to decide on the kind of game modes everyone could enjoy.

@A.T.H.K - I plan on making it single player first, naturally it's how i'll be able to test and enjoy it as I develop, but multi-player whether vs matches or a persistent world is certainly something i'm thinking about.

@Everyone - Glad you guys like it so far :) I still think this is really really early, i'm not even absolute about where to go next.
This looks so similar.
Looks great, keep up the fantastic work.
Well, screw you too. This was basically, though not exactly, the project I started working on two days ago.

There goes ALL my motivation!

Looks good though.

As far as similar projects go, it looks a lot like Planetary Annihilation, just with less bots everywhere.
100% BYOND but art work definetly not done with dream maker.

Congratulations.
