well, as I work on my current RPG, I've been getting bored with it, because in my mind I'm thinking, what possibly could I create that hasn't been somehow, in someway used before, and is totally original. SO I've decided to quit trying to make the RPG now until an idea comes to me, and now I'm working on a world domination game, a mix of risk/Gemfire with maybe a mix of the heroes of might and magic series ;P
so
what do you guys think? Should I, or shouldn't I?

I will improve on the graphics once I finish everything, the players are just numbers likea big colored block with a #1 in it, but this is just a rough draft, each town will have it's own name once I finish it, but this is a tricky question... how should I do the combat from town to town, should I draw lines to each town and have it RISK (random, whatever you roll) based, you get more rolls if you have more men... or should I have it so you actually have units, health, etc, the health increases the more units you put in them, and you tell them what do?? Hmm I think they did this once in... oh I forget, if it comes to me I'll post it :) Since this game isn't really ment to be totally original and just fun, and well, to add some extra twist to the BYOND hub games list, I'm curious what you would like to see in it... would you like spells? maybe cast ablizzard that hurts the harvest of a town far away, or if you're a frost lord, helps them? What about technology... I dont' wanna bring it into the guns era, so maybe from like simple bow, long bow, to x-bow, heavy x-bow, , etc? |

Well, I've already got a decent strategy game about halfway done (although I'm not particularly likely to get around to finishing it soon)... if you're worried about being too similar, the basic statistics that drive the game are set up a bit like Gemfire: the map has regions with the same sort of statistics as you might find in Gemfire, although they're a bit more detailed. Each region has several population pools, just raw numbers like Gemfire's armed forces attribute, each population type representing both a social class and military distinction. These serve both as your labor force and army, although the various types behave differently. There's not particularly much by way of randomness, in combat or much else... for the most part, just a lot of different variables. would you like spells? maybe cast ablizzard that hurts the harvest of a town far away, or if you're a frost lord, helps them? What about technology... I dont' wanna bring it into the guns era, so maybe from like simple bow, long bow, to x-bow, heavy x-bow, , etc? Basically, anything that increases tactical options is a plus in my book, although there are a few things to be wary of... you don't want to overdo it, after all, and you should generally try to make things as balanced as possible. If you had, say, 30 different spells to choose from and there were a couple that were so useful you'd never need to use any of the others, that's 25 or so worthless spells you wasted time making. Of course, you're free to do whatever you want. It would be very hard for you to produce a game that was astoundingly similar to the one I'm working on, even if you tried, so basically whatever you do is going to be distinct from my game. Just look at your own favorite strategy games and try and figure out the best features of each, and how to put in your own features in the spirit of those features (or just blatantly copy them, if that's more to your liking... if you've got a diverse enough set of sources, you could still produce a unique, original game). |

Why would you have to stop? becuase everyone would think that i copied from him, saw the post, thought it was a good idea, and so i copied off of him and no one will play my game, becuase it is a stolen idea. that's how it always happens to me and you know it! |

Why would you have to stop? If he knew it, he wouldn't have asked. "Strategy/War" is a huge genre, and there's lots of room for any number of strategy wargames. Now if you happened to know exactly what JonSnow's would be like and yours did coincidentally happen to be very similar, then yeah, some people might cry "copycat", but otherwise, the more the merrier! |

Why would you have to stop? Everything is like something else. Don't worry about it! You can not come up with an idea that won't make someone say "Yeah, that's just like such-and-such." The first time I hosted Tanks, two or three people asked if it was based on Battle City for SNES. Someone else told me I'd face copyright problems because there was a game called Battle Tanks (or something) a long time ago. (If it's the game I think it is, the only similarity between the two games was the word tank in the titles. :P) Actually, the basic ideas for Tanks come from Combat for the Atari 2600 :P Tanks is a lot like a lot of games. That doesn't matter, it's still different from each of those games in enough ways to make it... well... different. There are several games coming out on BYOND that let players play in tanks. They are each different, unique in their own ways. There is nothing wrong with making games based on similar ideas. That's what the gaming industry is all about! If not there would be only one car driving game, one first person shooter, one fighting game, one RPG, one puzzle game. It would be boring! Games get better by taking the good things from other games and putting an new twist on them. Use other peoples ideas, just make sure that you make them your own somehow. Innovate, don't clone. |

I can draw pretty well I guess lol... but if you don't want me to work on mine that's fine, I don't know coding all that wel yet I'm learning more every day, I work only about an hour each day on it... and it seems it's taking a little longer than I thought to make it... |
Hey, you can never have too many strategy wargames.
