Are games with face icons that appear next to the dialog (preferably good ones, not cheesy anime ones), more or less annoying than games without them?
|
I prefer them in some situations... like in the game Conflict, where players are guaranteed not to have the same icon. I'm not sure I ever found them annoying though.
As for why this is in Design Philosophy... it's about design philosophy, so I'm guessing that's why Foomer posted it here. Figuring out what annoys or doesn't annoy players is a major part of game design. Z |
I think having the ability to upload your own face icons would make the feature more enjoyable, and more personable.
|
I'd be afraid of having a dozen 32x32 pictures of Goku though.
I think I might make dialog messages show or not show face icons depend on the player's settings. That would work good. |
make sure you check the filesize too, i was once in a game (a zeta rip :P) where there was people spending ages uploading huge pictures for tiny faces.

There is nothing to prevent people from uploading whatever they want, besides the threat of being banned.
I'd sooner go with a wide variety of set pictures, though. |

heck, that was the first time i have ever used that word, so like i would know what it was supposta be.

Personally, I see no real reason for it... It does spice up the text window, and sets player messages apart from game text and whatnot...but I don't see those as being that important...
They're not really annoying, per se... But not really necessary in my eyes... However, if a bit more functionality were added to them (like having a bunch of different facial expressions that can be selected from with each message, sort of like emoticons or something) so they actually served a (useful) purpose, then I could justify them... |
I think they really aren't necessary, the most the really do usually is draw attention away from the game screen. Either way, I think you could tell the difference between people from their Character's name.
|
I think they are fairly useful for games already created. If you have lots of game messages like the Trinity Star, you'd have about 7 lines of hitting people, plus a status line. You can miss what a player says unless it's distinguished from the rest of the text, or you've got a nicely trained mudder's eye, like myself! ;)
..... of course, I don't use face icons. Thats just my "philosphing" :P |
realy that idea for using them as emoticons is not a bad idea, make it so the appear at the begining, and when you type, you just add... lets say :) to the send of your text, and the emote filter will get it and display the right one.
