Hmm, interesting idea. Someone make it! :)
Although lag would need to be kept to a bare minimum in a game like that...

As long as all the resources were downloaded at the beginning, game play should have only player and ball movement traffic to deal with. That's why I suggest 3x3 to start, just to make sure the game engine was fast and tight.
