Lately there has been much debute over DBZ games in byond. I personally think that there is no game in byond which could be classified as a fun DBZ Game.

Heres the question are DBZ games worth the time to make them and if so what would they need to be decent?

Depends on the person you're asking. I'm sure some people are enjoying the games whether or not you think they are bad. I think they're all bad based on the sole fact that they are fan games based on an anime. I don't like anime which means for any of them to be entertaining to me they'd have to be designed and implemented so well as to surpass that gigantic detriment.

So to sum that up, no they aren't worth the time to make.
Work on games with more "realism", at the moment I am working on a mountain climbing/hiking game, in which the user can die of hunger, thirst, energy loss, randomly falling while getting to close to the edge.

Realism adds to the game and makes them more fun, instead of "super p-bag, +1000000000000 power".

Good and Bad.

Realism is no substitute for bad design.

I'm currently designing/making a 3D MMORPG but it's a fantasy game, not a realistic game, does that make it less fun then if it was a reality game?

Maybe the dbz game(s) isn't (aren't) fun to most but from what I've seen it's fun to around 50+ other people who I'm sure aren't playing the game because it's too realistic, it's because it's designed to catch their attention. You shouldn't base your game on realism, although that is a good thing, but understand that people play games to "escape" the real world. Just a thought ...

Hehe, I'm so full of good post today!!! Sorry, I don't mean any harm but you might want to take a look at Mystic Journey and think again if making an anime is worth the time or not for Lil Trunks... I dunno, I kinda think that's what people like and it's good business, that's what you look for right?

Well I did check out Mystic Journey and not only is it anime it uses RPG Maker graphics which I think were intended for use in RPG Maker only. It was a relativly simple and pointless game that isn't really that entertaining compared to other games of the same genre. Anime does sell and is good buisiness but Mystic Journey isn't being sold so that's outside of the point. I hate Pokemon, but if I was selling it I would love it from the sheer amount of money it would make me, though I'd still dislike it as far as gameplay goes.

A dime per month is a form of business. ;-) As far as RPG Maker icons... not sure, but if they are I hope they were free and not of illegal usage. I'm not too familiar with the program.

You know I saw a bum holding a homeless sign make 5$ during a red light. That's 50 dimes in a few minutes! The author needs to find a better source of income as that won't make him money unless he had a lot of people paying and at that point the expense of running the server out does the money made. It may be buisiness but it is very bad buisiness. I'm not going to bother paying for any game under 5$ since anything less and the transaction is more costly than the amount exchanged. And if I'm paying 5$ it better be worth the 5$ which isn't too much but it's 50 times that of something worth a dime.

[Edit:] And come to think of it if he made that much money at every red light he probably had a better paying job than I did :P.

I guess that's just a judgement thing, but I agree. I do base things on quality if I'm paying; for instance, www.tibia.com, I find that one crappy game and would never pay $5 or however much they charge. As for Star Wars Galaxies, I didn't mind paying around $15 for the game... until school started and I was faced with paying $1000+ up front without use of my loans (broke me for a few long months)... Right now, for the game I'm working on our plan is to charge around $7 due to the quality/design of a well planned game. We have both OpenGL support and DirectX 9 support, although we're focusing more on the DX 9 engine since I like their High Level Shader Language (HLSL)/XBox Port availability... dont' get me wrong, OpenGL has Cg from Nvidia.... although DX9 is more elegant to work with at this point in time. (Neither is superior though)...

Anyways, the point is yes I agree that it's not the best game in the world, but I also want to point out that they do have, (obviously), a good game in many people's eyes and it happens to be anime and I think Lil Trunks would do well with making an anime game.... wow, talk about a run-on sentence hehe....

I'd suggest you realize that if you're paying $15 a month for a Sony MMORPG, you are actually paying closer to $20 to $25 a month, when you throw in the expansions, which come out every 3-6 months, and which you must buy to have any fun. That means that you could be buying a new game every 2-3 months instead of playing the MMORPG. And right now there is a literal metaphorical deluge of good new games coming out, such as Half-Life 2, Thief 3, kill.switch (anime game, mentioned because you seem the type to enjoy it), Rainbow six 3 (Silly naming), and more.

So really, are you willing to give up those games for a glorified whack-a-mole game?

Speaking of pokemon games, and bad design, the one i have made shows menu effects and text effects to mimick pokemon Gold version, i didnt get that far, but it was a lot more advanced then the other pokemon games you find on the hub. http://games.byond.com/hub/Mrhat99au/PokemonGoldEvolved Keys
Enter: Menu/Look at things(Cant remeber)
Space: Use things

Its too bad i lost the source to it.

Anyways... your point is that no one should buy a MMORPG right? Very wrong my friend, if that were the case then the 250,000+ people must all in the wrong just as myself. You have to understand that in this world there are people that have jobs and have money, and there are people that have any income and can't comprehend the use of money. I could very well take my $15 and subscribe to a magazine... does that still make it wrong for a .... how did you say it.... 'whack-a-mole' item? I also pay around $10 for my web host, is that 'whack-a-mole'? Or what about the $4,000+ for my college a semester, is that 'whack-a-mole'? Or, I LOVE THIS ONE, $200+ for my rent in a small house, now... I'd agree my landlord is 'whack-a-mole' lol... jk, I love her. What about my Cable, or my Cable internet... 'whack-a-mole'? Laptop...? Anyways, my friend, I highly doubt spending $15 is a 'whack-a-mole' idea unless you really can't afford it. It's all about money management, what budget I can afford to have.

Ok ok, that was all in the defense of whoever bought the game SWG (me and my co-workers and the 250k+ people). Now if you read my post clearly you would've seen that I ended up cancelling my subscription when I was faced with a bill of over $1k for my University (all before 30 days so it was free for me); Also, I don't play additive games like that when I'm faced with my courses (Compiler Theory sucks btw, I dunno how the guys who made BYOND really got through that...). Does this make sense though? I mean, I don't want to be rude, but saying that I'm wasting my money on some lame game was pretty harsh when you don't even know my financial situation. I could be a millionair just passing through. Nothing is 'whack-a-mole' if you have the money for it.

It doesn't matter how much or how little money you have, wasting money is still wasting money :P. The only difference is the impact of the wasteful spending on your financial state.

But it's not a waste if you have fun and can afford it.

Whether or something is a waste of money depends on the person. This is why dumb things like selling rocks with eye's glued to them actually works.
In response to Theodis
exactly, this is why fuzzydice has stated that if you have fun and can afford it, it's all upon the person. It's all about financial management and what your budget can afford. At my job we just purchased a huge white board for just one person's office for drawing UML diagrams on what certain components we need to code up. Well, this person really didn't need one (he had 2 already), and for me it was kind of a waste of the company's money; yet still, the company can afford it so it doesn't matter whether or not it was a waste. He certainly can write up longer explainations on his board when we come to him with a new project or new components that we need to code/design.

[EDIT]: wow, from dbz to budget management... sounds like my accounting class.

As others have brought up, realism isn't for everyone.

I personally enjoy games with complex and unpredictable systems, and realism tends to work fairly well for those. However, realism is an extremely limited niche; if you are making a game based on realism, then there are two considerations you have to make:

1) What is your ideal player base?
2) Is your realism necessary, and does it make the play experience more enjoyable?

If your answer to the first question is "die-hard console RPG fans", then your answer to #2 would be "No, realism does not make the play experience more enjoyable." If your answer to the first question is "simulation fans and mythological afficionados", then #2 would be "Yes, realism would be great!"

(The Haven Seed appeals to the latter, by the way.)

heh You know if you don't release this game soon you'll either set the record for longest running vaporware, or hype your game so much as to destroy yourself when you do release it and it's not this super game everyone made it out to be.
In response to Theodis
I'm citing Haven as a supporting example. I gave up on hyping it a long time ago.
