#1: What do you think of small-ish games such as games from the 4k challenge, or just other "simple" games. Not necciesarily(spelling?) easy, but a small, simple game.
#2: What games would you like that are "small and simple"? Lately, I've been in a mood to create some small, quality games. Thanks for suggestions

No, it doesn't. If we closed a Design Philosophy thread every time someone offered a different opinion, there wouldn't be a Design Philosophy forum... what's the point of putting up your ideas if people don't give critiques?

Go down to your local hobby shop, find a small game (Like the one Incursion was based on), then change the theme and make a computer version of it.
It's a pretty cheap tactic for making a game, but a lot of those games make excellent small* BYOND games. *They aren't small, but because of the "no-brainer" level of thought you put into design and stuff they can be considered small. |
His statement could be interpreted in one of two ways, yes, but I, eternal optimist that I am, assumed he meant the less deeply flawed one.
Here we have two people agreeing, granted, but they're only agreeing insofar as to tell the first person that he's dead wrong. How does that constitute "no disagreement?" Furthermore, if he's aping the mannerisms of Lummox's slightly-more-neanderthal-than-usual persona, as indicated by the use of "Ungh," then that would mean that "No" is the beginning of an imperative statement or command, not an observation of a lack. If his statement is meant to be interpreted as, "Hey, there's no disagreement here! What gives?", then Lummox's "No put usr in proc." would mean, "Hey, you forgot to put usr in proc! What gives?" |

Heh well if I had a good idea that didn't take much work I'd have already done it :P. Tetris is a perfect example of a small game that has been laregly successful. Tetris is the best selling game ever and has had a version on just about anything with a few buttons and a display. Plus it's simple enough to build for just about any programmer to build. Too bad Alexi Pajitonov didn't make anything off of it since he was living in communist Russia at the time.

I would like to see a game similar in concept to Proelium, but offering something of a levelling system. Just a few levels, maybe 1 to 10, with only slight increases per level. Lets take the Proelium Druid, 80 hp, 65 armor. Say it would gain 1/20th to each stat on levelup, giving it 4 hp a level, and 3.25 armor. Maybe throw in some NPC mobs in the arena that randomly spawn based on the tileset...
Ok, so it's not that SMALL of an idea, but it's still good. CCG --- Along other lines, a miniature CCG game would rock. Go for a tabletop graphical look, and a very simple framework with maybe 50 different card types (if even), work on making it as balanced as possible, and I would gladly fork over some cash to play. I don't think it would take half as much effort as you might think. Graphical MUD --------- --- Create something out of this. Defense ------- A game similar in structure to the "10-way Defense" games on StarCraft. Essentially, there is a path down the center of a level, and players design turrets on either side of the line, every 90 seconds or so, mobs are released unto the playing field, and the players need to work together to prevent the mobs from slipping past the turret defenses. Every 10 kills or so, the player gets "cash" to buy a new special unit, or the minerals to build more turrets. These games are quite fun. Shadowgate ---------- A good Shadowgate-style game. You need to collect certain items to solve puzzles, perhaps getting a torch to light a fuse, which blows open a passage to the next part of the cavern, then needing to find a pickaxe to cut through some rock deeper into the cavern, and things of that nature. Essentially a no-combat screen-by-screen puzzle game. Fisher Price ------ ----- A head-to-head competition game where players need to drag and drop shapes, colors, monsters, or whatever suits your fancy, to the matching drop zones on the screen. Take it a step farther by having them drop the monsters in the zones for the first minute, then having a combat phase take place (Using the monsters they dropped.), and whoever wins the combat phase gets a point. I started making one once, but it fell through. Major hint: If you want to keep your life simple, make it a top-down view. One tile per character (plus an overlay to make it 32 pixels wide by 64 pixels high, if you like). |
