I enjoy to roleplay, its simple yet effective. It still has its problems though, like the many morons that have to ruin the mood by saying smart remarks and just being ridiculous. Is there any real way to keep players os the roleplay topic? Is strict administrative moderating the only way to insure a fun environment for everyone?

It seems like it. You can do what Hedgerow Hall does and place a uncloseable browser window at the start explaining the rules that waits a minute before it lets the player on. That helps stop players who just randomly join games to say they are crappy.
|
The trick is to advertise to a roleplaying community and filter out the morons with things such as written backgrounds or character descriptions.

Example of it please? Like a pop-up browser window with descriptions of playable characters which would only relate to those interested in roleplaying. Instead of the random player looking for a place to taint.

I think what Foomer is hinting at is that A) You shouldn't find players on the HUB, you should find them at roleplaying groups and other places like that, and B) If you add stuff that involves thinking, such forcing the player to write a two paragraph text description during the character creation process, you'll filter out a lot of the problem players.

Advertising in a roleplaying community is good idea. However, Dantom currently can't handle much more bandwidth. Taking game files off of Dantom's server probably helps a bit and advertising a telnet game might be fine (since new people would not need to connect to Dantom). However, I have seen no official word that says Dantom is ready to "go public" yet.
Background writing may bring in people who are both interested in themes and willing to put in some effort. However, it's static. Roleplaying requires bouncing off of things within the game. The RPG might end up with a lot of bad fanfic writers who go out of character whenever their irrelevant story is not catered to. While filters might help, I like just having mutable/ignorable channels for both in-character and out-of-character actions and then slapping the bleep out of whoever tries to mix the two categories. In other words, I do think administrative moderating is the real way to go but I like to provide outlets that decrease the workload while still not offending other players. |
Hey, given that I've been role-playing for about 8 years now... I know what you're saying... In T:CN, we're all about free-form roleplay, and we've found that the best way to bring the inner role player out of a BYONDer is to have large community events... Such as political turmoil leading to revolt by citizens, or a foreigner arrives in town and sends the players off on a quest for a person or treaure... Recently, we've had a lot of warfare going on between vampiric bloodlines... All heavily Role-Played... People who dont take this stuff serious, usually avoid this. There have been cases of say, 3 or 4, in which annoying players spammed the RP scene or such... The solution? Tell them you're in the process of Role Play, and if they continue, disband them from the game... If they keep doing it, ban them as effectively as you can (keybans usually work nowadays.) Page me sometime if you want to experience the wonders of great role play... (Truth is: Tara'ka: Carpe Noctem is currently down... I'll announce when it is once again active.)

I do believe what I hate most about BYOND is that you can't just have a game without carrying the rest of the BYOND community with you... >:o( |

I have a feeling most people will be curious about the client they have to download first, and then that rotating ad banner after that.

That's why I like the telnet support.

I have the same problem. I used to go to a weekly D&D 3rd edition game group every friday. It was fun, but the DM would do dumb crap, like have a player caught by some sex crazed nun and have him tied up and whiped for 3 hours. It started to piss me off.
So I decided to start my own group. And i review each person who comes to the group. If they dont work out the first game, they wont be coming back. I also limit certian things players can do, say or use. An example is a orgamis spell that makes people stop in their place. Or throwing rocks at hobos. In the end, you just need to set down rules, and be slightly strict on certain subjects, and slap them in the back of the head when they get out of line. Its my firm beliefe people strive for chaous, and so its only natural players try to stir up trouble. If your looking for serious role playing, I suggest reviewing each player and setting strict rules. |

Along those lines, you need to enforce roleplaying. If roleplaying is not fully enforced, and people can get away with chatting about BYOND or programming or their girlfriend or whatever for a few minutes while a moderator isn't looking, then it ruins the atmosphere, and discourages roleplaying.
Nothing spawns better roleplaying than a good roleplaying environment. Its the atmosphere of the game that gets people in the mood to participate. |

Just remove the 'sex' part and then play that way. But maybe evin that is to much. I play versen3.5 is beter! MUCH BETER! |
