In my administration system for the game I am developing I have created two admin only verbs; the first to kill every enemy mob in the game, the second to destroy all players. It achieves this by hitting them with a random amount of damage no one in the game could possibly sustain...My question is this: Is this ethical? Should I bestow this power among my appointed GM's or should I use ckey and just make it so only I have the...err...power? Or better yet, would these verbs only create disension among my players? (Though the idea of just blasting everyone to death on my server if they get annoying or irritating amuses me)

No, its not ethical, I dont evin think its useful.
Here is the admin verbs I use in mi game: * X_Del = deletes eny datum in the world * X_Dump = displays the values uv variables uv eny datum in the world * X_List = displays the contents list uv eny datum in the world * X_SetText = sets a value uv eny text variable uv eny datum in the world * X_SetNumber = sets a value uv eny number variable uv eny datum in the world * X_SetDatum = sets a value uv eny datum variable uv eny datum in the world * X_Create = creates a object uv eny type in eny place enywere in the world * X_World = displays text on evrybudys screen * X_BrowseTo = display a web page on a serten players screen * X_UserList = display list uv all users login, ther IP adres, and how long thay ar inactive. * X_Teleport = teleports eny datum to eny x,y,z place |
Only thing you will get out of verbs like these is alot complaints. Think about what a 10 year old would do with a verb like this. ;)

I can't say for kill all players, but I don't see how a kill all enemy mobs wouldn't be useful at some point. If they have spawns that create more before the first one dies, the game could eventually clutter and a command like that would find some use.

That is a flaw in the spawn design then, and should be dealt with there, not with an admin verb.
I see no reason that you would need to kill ALL mobs and/or ALL players. For mobs, a single delete_mob verb would be all you need. If you find yourself having to deal with more than five mobs then there is a flaw in the game design or something went horribly wrong and needs to be fixed at the design level. For players, why not use a banning system. Any detriments to dying (such as exp loss, money loss, etc) can be done with other verbs. It's actually less annoying to see "Soandso penalized you [x] exp for [reason]" than it is to see "Soandso killed you." or "You died". Especially if you weren't in a battle to begin with. |

Its like you being on the moon (with gravity for the sake of the bullets :P)
with 10 other children, and one of them has a loaded gun, However they are not allowed to use it... Wouldn't work eh ;)? |

Just thought I'd point out (for educational purposes) that the moon does indeed have gravity. However, it's gravitational pull is significantly less than Earth's. 1/6 to be exact. Remember the astronauts leaping and frolicing (and even playing golf :P ) on the moon? If there was no gravity they would never return to the surface of the moon.
One last annoying tidbit: All matter generates gravity. It's just that some create more than others. The moon's gravity is enough that it affects the tides. In fact, it is the moon that causes the tide. |

That last statement isn't EXACTLY correct. If we had no moon we would still have tides. The sun also affects the tides, hence Leap and Neep (not sure of the exact names, but it's something like that) tides.

After reading these reactions I have decided upon 2 things so far...1. People are not capable of handling the temptation of killing all the players...so that verb I'll probably ckey or do away with...2. I do think there is some relevance to a verb that could kill all mobs, like a GM event, because when I kill them this way, they still drop gold, and items...Perhaps though, this (GM) event would only happen during rare occasions, such as an abnormally low amount of people playing on the server...It would make the players feel like they've been rewarded for playing...and would be more likely to play the next time...I know this because I used to play a mud which no longer exists known as RedDragon...which is also where I got the idea for an extended class system...But you can also see extended class systems (now that I think about it) in Dark Ages of Camelot, or RetroMud...etc...
Okay...thanks every one for the imput! |

Why would they want to play more because they died rather unfairly/pointlessly? If a GM killed everyone in any of the games I played you'd have to garentee that GM was banned from the game before I'd step foot into it again.

Meh, my apologies. I should have taken into account the largest gravitational body in our local system :P

No, you miss understand...I meant to say I was going to keep the verb that allowed the GM to kill all enemy mobs...not the players...re-read my last post with that in mind...

I would say keep the mob kill verb but maybe change the player kill verb to something more like a blast radius so if any player is pissing you off find him(better yet make a teleport verb) and hit player kill and everyone that's in the blast field, say your screen or what you can see, will die. Including the little annoying child that happened to log on and piss you off. Then if that doesn't work... BAN 'EM.

I definantly wouldn't trust anyone with this sort of power.
It serves no real purpose.
