I'm currently doing a rogue like game however i wanted to add Quests. I am stuck here now and asking this : "What are fun and original quests?" If you have an idea for a quest post it here because I'm fresh out.

Well, if I had no pants, I'd probably go on a quest to find some. I thought the name was humorous. :P

On a slightly more useful note... ;-)
I'm told there's a similar (and infamous) quest in Morrowind, where the player's shoes get stolen by an NPC and there's a quest to get them back. The reward isn't huge - most shoes aren't very expensive - but it sure adds some character to the world! "Gimme my shoes back, dangit!" =P Perhaps you could do something similar, but with different items of equipment. A roaming NPC thief that occasionally darts out and steals items of little value from players would be amusing! Just make sure that you can get the items back. And it would probably be less annoying (and therefore better) if the thief only stole the cheapest or most common items. |
I despise games that have quests, that work in such a way, that a player can complete a quest for an NPC, and the NPC will still offer the quest to other players. Such as, (as seen in a DBZ Rip) Goku has lost his doll. Find it for him. Surely, once he has been given his doll once, he won't need it again, and again, and again?
In my game, Quests can only been done once, and are only able to be attempted at the will of a Mod. If no Mods are on, no quests will be available. If a Mod clicks "Turn on 'Kill the Orc Warlord' Quest" then it will be available for attempt until completed. However, there are so many quests, and so many other things to do, players don't get bored. And after a few days, old quests can be restarted without any quarrel from the roleplayers, as it is surely possible a new Orc Warlord arose in the last few days =P ~Ease~ |

That's a nice idea. Alternatively, you could create dynamic quests. The NPC would make similar offers to everyone, but how the quest progresses depends upon how the individual player chooses to complete it, and possibly some random events. Sort of like those Choose Your Own Adventure books. Those rocked.

a quest to kill your boss? You know, your boss has been having a bad mood and demotes everyone, when your best friend stands up, the boss kills him. Then, it is your quest to get revenge. Not much of a quest, and you may have to reword it a little bit, but it'll pass the time in case the players get bored.

...huh...
Never heard of anything like that. On a side note, Morrowind's AWESOME! Nightwatch is going to have a new quest every so often, assuming the latest one get's completed. And each will have a unique, only one occurence, item or power. ~PAK~ |
