What makes a popular game? And what makes a game average?
My team has been recently discussing on how we should do this. We were thinking of making an average game to draw people in and then creating an awesome game, worthy of hitting the number one rank. Any tips, suggestions, insights? Please reply. Anything is helpful.

You can have all the fancy graphics you want, but without gameplay, it's not a game and you may as well go watch a CGI movie. |
The truth is both of you below me are wrong. If there was a true winning formula. Everyone would be using it if there was. Unfortunetly there is not. Just do whatever you think feels right. It might work, it might not who knows.

I'm not saying graphics aren't important, bad graphics can kill any game, but good graphics won't save a boring game. You could just 'do what feels right', but game design is an art. You can get degrees in game design. However, this is a discussion for another thread. We aren't being helpful. |

What makes a good game in this community?
Bells and whistles. Forget making anything actually good. Just spam your game with cheesy anime and cliche. What actually makes a game good? Creative thinking. When you have people on your game who tell you that it is actually good and that you've done something that no one else has you know you hit the jackpot. Its a good feeling, I should know. In any case. Yeah, its the thinking behind the work that matters. |

What makes a good game in this community? Wait a minute! Look, your statement about the bells and whistles is true only for the people that are infatuated with the anime portion of the site. Most of the other people (myself included and whatever DigitalMouse is) respect games that actually have some real substance. But yes, doing something better or new is always a plus for a game. |

True, but who actually looks at the good stuff? I mean, I didn't even realize half of the games on this site were actually good until I found them. Everyone is lazy and no one looks anymore. Its sad too. Theres some real gems out there.

If you enjoy playing it, its a good game.
However, what makes a game good is not what makes it popular. Popularity is more like elusive randomness than anything. People go where their friends are, and if that happens to be your game, it'll be popular. If its not, it won't. But in the end, if you can't enjoy your own game, what's the point? Just make a chatroom and hope its popular. |

Popularity is more about pyshcology and marketing and less about game design. You would think good games would be more popular, but they aren't. It's sickening.

I was reading something about good games not essentially being popular somewhere a couple days ago. I have to disagree with whoever said if you think a game is fun, it is good. Look at most movie licenced titles, they are crappy yet a lot of people like them. |

People will like what TV tells them they should like. It's all about hype. People are told this is cool, so they do it to fit in.

Ok, I read all of your opinions and thoughts. I'll keep these in my thoughts as I'm continuing my game. Thanks again.

In any RPG, anime especially, you need to establish a hierarchy of players using some sort of trainging system.
This could be hitting a punching bag, punching air, killing monsters, practicing spells, killing other players, etc etc. The most popular games have different methods of training. Then, along the way, set up incentives for people to train. This could be new techniques, new weapons, new armor, etc etc..If the only incentive to train is to get stronger, peopl will realize that it's pointless pretty fast. PvP games work the best because there will always be an incentive to get stronger and there's always that guy that spends 20 hours a day playing the game. Graphics are not essesntial but its easier to play a game for hours on end if it's pretty to look at, and you want some sense of reality in a game, so it cant just be sticks and stick figures. That, essentially, is the winning formula, but you have to add originality and creativity to disguise this formula. As long as you do this and the coding is good, not to mention good grammar in the text to make the player think the owner actually knows what he's doing, you're good! |

If the only incentive to train is to get stronger, people will realize that it's pointless pretty fast. So, your perfect formula is to fool players into thinking your game is fun? That, essentially, is the winning formula, but you have to add originality and creativity to disguise this formula. You use creativity to disguise your 'winning formula'? Shouldn't that be a part of the 'winning formula'? |
