In most RPG's I've seen, you can only have one character save file, and to make another, you have to delete your previous savefile. My question is, what are the advantages of having a multiple file save system per key verses a one save per key system?

Good point. But how many slots should a player be able to use? After so many save files it'd start to get redundant. 3, maybe 5 save files per key?

You can store multiple characters under the same key in one savefile. See the 'Character Handling' demo by Deadron.

i think his point might be that having 100 characters, why would u wanna, and that people can create 10000's of chars to waste space on his system, and he doesnt want them to go to unlimited, he just wants to set a limit on it.
Id say this though, just make it so they can have unlimited, and let them deal with it, dont make any limit, and i might even make a thing to tell me which keys have the most chars, in a list of names, and sorted from highest to lowest, that way you know if someones trying to make chars, to make it so the computer goes slow, or otherwise has no space, and just look at it every so often, if someone gets out of range of so many, talk with him, see why he has so many, and if he doesnt give a reasonable explanation, delete his save. but i know people (including me that will make 10 or even 40 or 50 chars, to do certain things on games, all on the same key, and depending on w/e i wanna do even have them at certain places, so i can have loads of fun, like chasing someone, log on another char, and still have even more fun still, lol |
I like the 1 save, 1 key system because it limits players on cheating. A lot of the online games on BYOND, you start off with something, usually. If you allow people to have multiple save files, they can make multiple players and then just give all the starter gear to one player.
Then again, as with a normal MMO, players like to have alternatives to play as, as well. So I usually allow players to have up to 3 saves before having to delete one. |

then just make it so you cant give those items away, and once u put something else on it, it decintegrates.
of just if u try and drop it, or even try and trade or sell it, it will decintegrate, and you not be able to get m,oney for any of those items at all, anywhere. i have seen it in many other games. |

Thats not the point, when players are given more then one save per key, they are going to find ways to abuse it, they almost alyways do. In the end it is going to be up to the developer to decide what is best.

i am aware of that, but many players will not play if there is only one char allowed.
including me even. Also, there wouldnt be a really easy way to abuse it, since you cant get anything from starter equip, in any way at all. Also, i dont see how they can really cheat after that, since they have to work for the stuff still, also, if they want, they will make 100's of chars on byond, and not worry about it. Either way, they will have to work at it a little to get any kind of money from the other char at all. So whether or not you givem the ability, they are gonna do multiple accounts anyways if they want another char. And if you do it by ip, you are killing my ability to be able to play with my bro, since are router masks ip, so we wouldnt be able to play at same time, so thats another reason i wouldnt play if u did that. |

The problem there is that savefiles should be secured someway. Even a simple hash would be enough to stop most BYONDers from screwing with their savefiles.

these ones are server-side so i dont see how that applys in this case, is there anything else wrong?

On such a case as multi-playing off the same IP is concearned, with the game I am doing, it keeps track of it, but does not prevent it. Each case would be delt with personally.
If you and your broher play and we believe you, then there wont be a problem. But if you show odd behaviour and we decided you are playing both people at the same time, its the ban hammer for you. |

The possibility of players cheating is no excuse to not including that system. If you can't handle players cheating via code (which you probably can), have someone administrate the players and punish those who cheat.
|
I'm of the opinion that they should be given two chars, and if they want more than that, they can use more than one key. The criteria being that they can have both characters on at the same time, but their characters cannot interact unless there are RP circumstances that demand it.
ie, they have a character in one guild and another character in another guild, they cannot use information against the two guilds, but they can act spy and give the information to a character played by another person. |

My question is, what are the advantages of having a multiple file save system per key verses a one save per key system? Some people, myself included, like trying different things out at different times. Allowing people to have several characters can diversify their gameplay experience and let them try out everything that a game has to offer, assuming the game is complex enough that you can't experience everything with just one character. Allowing people to use a single key to connect to multiple characters is generally ideal because it doesn't encourage people to create multiple accounts unnecessarily, making it easier for you to administrate when problem players come up. I would go so far as to say that the one-character-per-key system is the lazy way out. If you intend to allow players to have multiple characters (whether across multiple accounts or within a single account), it's better to support it by programming support for it. That isn't to say that people couldn't still connect with other keys if they really wanted to, but many of us only use a single key and anyone who uses more than one (outside of local testing) with any seeming regularity should be considered suspect at best. |
