Well I have recently started work on developing a single player RPG in 4.0.
I had intended on adding in such things as Quests, Magic, Unlockable Races, Armour, Weapons, Vendors, Jobs, Mining etc. (The usual). Well the theme of the game, i guess could be slightly compared to Fable.
The thing is, would this idea kick off? I know I would have to add in more originality to it, but the base of the game will be your typical RPG. I have had thoughts of discontinuing it, however I am pretty intent on creating a single player game on Byond that people can play at any time, by themselves and at their own pace.
Comments, criticisms or suggestions?

Make two versions: Singleplayer and Multiplayer. To be honest I wouldnt play Singleplayer game on BYOND when I have connection, or can download much better quality game and play it.

Great idea. A fun single player game is often much more story driven then the typical multiplayer RPG. Don't worry if people will play it- they will. Make something you like and you are much more likely to stick with it!

Thank you Jmurph, that is what I am going for, a byond game that people can play with a decent storyline. As long as I get the main part of it done, I can later patch in things like new quests etc.; allowing people to continue playing without much disruption to their character. Of course this does not include main quests, which will affect the storyline.
And Ripiz, I did consider creating two versions, but to be honest I would rather just make a single player version. First off, I have not seen any really good single player games on Byond, and I am quite keen on creating one. Secondly, I would have to create one of them first anyways; if I work on two, then I will get distracted and eventually lose interest. |
Pros for a single-player game:
- They're easier to make, since you don't have to worry about what each individual player will be seeing, and since it won't be running over a connection, you don't have to worry about lag either and you can things that would be too intensive for a typical online game. - As Jmurph correctly said, you have much more control over story and what happens to the player in a single-player game. Plus you don't have to put up with a bunch of idiots running around with names like ezpwnj005512 ruining the delicate atmosphere of the game and generally causing trouble. Cons for single-player games: - It can be easier to get motivation to work on a game if its actively hosted while you're working on it and you always have players to give you feedback. - Its harder to make money on a single-player game, and BYOND's gaming fund has no provision for them. But this only matters if you care about earning money. - A lot of single-player cames can be more easily developed with other tools, so you face the fact that most people visit BYOND for multi-player games and may not be interested in your game. |

Easiest way propobly would be to finish Singleplayer version, then it will need just little edit to become multiplayer, like few fixes whe fighting PvP and etc...
Still, some (maybe a lot, not sure) will be interested in playing it. Because the more I have connection, the more I get bored from Multiplayer games, because on almost every game there are same features: kill, learn, level up, grind, list ends here. Exept few exeptions, like Raids in WoW, raids in L2, but it's becoming common too... If you make something special if would be popular for sure. And if it's original, you can remake it with some engine. I will have much more features than BYOND. |
There is a lot of better (MUCH better) programs out there that can be used to make single player games. Honestly, the only advantage BYOND has other a lot of those programs is that it can easily make multiplayer online games.
Kind of sucks but, if you ask me there isn't much point in using BYOND over another program unless you do intend on utilizing BYONDs multiplayer features. So, taking that into account one idea might be to might be to make a small scale multiplayer RPG. Basically it would be a standard single player RPG like what you want, but if someone wanted they could play either alone, or with a small group of friends (each person might play as a party member or something like that). But yeah, unless you intend on doing something like that it would be much quicker, easier and the results would be a lot better if you simply went and used another program. |

Could you link to some of these "other programs"? I haven't found anything as easy as BYOND that offers the same amount of flexibility. RPG Maker's much easier, sure, but you lose a lot of control unless you learn RGSS (which is ludicrously difficult when compared to DM). All of the major programming languages are harder than DM as well.
I'd say BYOND is still very much a viable platform for games, both single and multiplayer. The balance of ease-of-use with control is something I haven't found elsewhere. |

A myriad of other programming languages are rather simple to learn if one simply puts in the time. Especially with a background in DM the difficulty factor would be greatly lowered due to many of the similarities. I myself am currently working on a single player project so with that if you have a story and game play with which you are satisfied I personally wish you good luck with your project.
