Okay I have two ideas for my game AVS(A Vampires Solstice). That is a round based game, that will reboot after rounds are over, so I have two ideas for the login...

1). When you login you see the main GFX screen for the game, and wait till the host or owner starts the game. Then you get a random character(Of course everyones different), and get placed in a random house or selective place. Then from there the round will start, and there are few stuff to save on your account.

or

2). When you login you see 3 character selection boxes, with your information inside(A picture on left, name on right, key under, and maybe some statistics or something). If you dont have a save on one of the slots it says Empty. If you click a occupied slot then you load it and wait at starting screen as normal, though if its empty then you go to create a character, first pick the base(Male, Female, Fat, Child), base color, hair, hair color, eye color, clothes, then name. Then you go to starting screen and wait as normal.

So say which one you guys like best, or make up your own idea ^^.
I prefer 2 in honesty, it enables the player to customize their own avatar, and it could be used for highscore boards and such.

Well I would still add a save system for that sorta stuff if we used #1. But ya, mainly its like...

1). Fast/efficient and ease of use, though no control.

2). More customization for your character(Though only just looks and the name).
A mix of both. You have a choice of either random or custom.

I was thinking of that, but that would get to complicated(And I want simplicity!) So 1 or 2, or other(And this would count as an other, but I don't want to use this idea sorry, though thanks for posting).
How about when you login you get a window with the following options:

- tutorial: pops up a window where you get info about how to play either textually or by playing a few rounds against simple AI opponents. Exit back to main window.

- character: pops up a window where you set up one, remove one, change your current one. Exit back to previous window.

- play: takes you to a window that shows games that are waiting for players. If any exist, then you choose one and join it and then the wait window pops up until the host starts it or you give up and exit it. If none exist or you don't want to join one of the available ones, you can create a new one, set up whatever parameters, then wait for others to join yours.

While waiting, you should be able to chat with others who are also waiting, or if no one else is online at least read the instructions or something.

Ideally, I prefer being able to play against a computer opponent before playing against humans.
In my experience, when players are faced with a choice between being able to customise something and not being able to customise something, they will almost always prefer the customisation.

Off that topic, the one thing I'd like to mention is that forcing a reboot tends to look like the lazy way out. Ideally, you would handle all of the game state stuff on your own: clear out the list of players, drop everyone back to the lobby, delete the mobs, save the data, and leave the game running without forcing a reboot. The effect is less jarring and more professional.
1 because it is faster and who cares about looks? you know who YOUR char is so use him and play the games till its over and it starts up like a second later

So by your logic, it's awesome if you play as this character?
