I have seen several (lots, actually) of games that use RPG Maker graphics-- grass, trees...
I am currently working on a game, and my iconer wants to use the RPG Maker graphics-- but, is it a good or bad thing?
Do you like RPG Maker graphics?
Do you think they are overused?
Do you think they are overrated?
If you were to make a review on a game with these graphics, would you give it a high score or a low score?
Just type out what you think of them, and whether or not they should be used in BYOND games (overall, not just mine, -_-).
Thanks for reading,

Bad, Enterbrain's ToS to use those graphics explicitly says that they are to be used for RPG maker games only. QFE (Quoted For Effectiveness). I agree with this statement 100%. Please try not to use the default RPG maker graphics for your BYOND game. |
As long as the game play is fun then I don't mind the graphics. Though as previous post have stated, RPG Maker Graphics are a bit overused.

He is right. Technically using RPG Maker graphics with anything but RPG Maker (which you have bought, legally) is illegal.
Anyway, I don't think it is that RPG Maker graphics are bad in particular. The problem is people here don't even have any idea how to use RTP graphics. RPG Maker graphics can look excellent if used properly, but the best we get here is... http://armchairarcade.com/neo/system/files/images/ br_rpg.thumbnail.jpg Something like this, but even that might be a bit better than the majority of BYOND games that use RTP. http://www.rpgrevolution.com/tutorial/68/01h.jpg This is 1000x better than most BYOND RTP useages, but it is mediocre at best. http://www.byond.com/members/TheMagicMan/files/b3.png That is an example of decently used RPT, but I've never seen a BYOND game make use of it half as good as that. RMP Maker XP graphics on the other hand... AMAZING. http://www.byond.com/members/TheMagicMan/files/ businesssectorwd3.png http://www.byond.com/members/TheMagicMan/files/ muppyduppybp4.png http://www.byond.com/members/TheMagicMan/files/somepic.png http://www.byond.com/members/TheMagicMan/files/ desertcity7et.jpg http://www.byond.com/members/TheMagicMan/files/d98fb178.jpg http://www.byond.com/members/TheMagicMan/files/ untitled%2D6.jpg http://www.byond.com/members/TheMagicMan/files/ untitled%2D3.jpg (Had this one ever been finished it would have been MIND BLOWING) Seriously. RPG Maker graphics aren't as bad or over used as you seem to think. You just don't know how to use them properly and have probably never seen them being used very well. |
I think if you actually use a full set of graphics in order to make the game look nice - as in, using the graphics the way they were supposed to be used - then its not so bad to use them, especially if they fit your game.
Keep in mind that there are a lot of custom-made RPGmaker terrain and sprite sets out there. If you're going to use RPGmaker stuff, I'd say use something custom-made. At least a game that uses consistent RPGmaker graphics which were designed to be used together is better than a game which uses random ripped graphics from various sources. Just remember that you can make your game look terrible regardless of how good the graphics used are. Make the most of the graphics and it doesn't really matter where they came from. |
Also, yeah, they are overused, and I'd rather have a game had sub-par original graphics than those.
