So as some of you may have heard I(And the great Staff) am making a MMORPG game called Empire. Where you live out any life you want to in the Greek ages.

The idea I had for this game is where you start out as a regular human(No extra races) and pick what province(I will go into greater detail about this) or organization you want to live in, and what occupation(Depending on the province/organization) you want. Then you live your life out doing that job, or taking on different ones in a real world concept trying to get to the 'top', which is being a leader of an organization/province.

One of the main ideas is being able to build your own province/build on someone elses. I province can range from a whole empire(Made up from City-States>Castles>Towns>Villages) to a Village. Though owning a province submits you to allowing newcommers to join, it also allows you to be attacked and raided by other provinces/orgs. So you may want to become allies with others.

Organizations can be anything, from Pirates, to Bandits, or Raiders, or even cults or small town orgs that don't own there own sorta province. They can be started by making the right documents for members and setting them up in a province or making your own evil organization(Which could easily be stomped out by knights).

Living in a province is simple too. You never have to work to own anything, you could be a simple Barber, farmer, clothier, knight, or pub owner living the simple life! These all belong under owned provinces though.

And finally running your province, this is done however you want it. You set up all the rules and what it all does(Though you have Mayors and Generals). You can make it warlike and strict like Sparta, or all about Education and technology like Athens. But remember, people could start up an organization and rebel!

These are just a few ideas i've had for it. I would love to know what people think about them and even more so if you have your own ideas or would like to help! Also if you have any questions or want to know more you can ask about it here or contact me via AIM at: [email protected] .

Well...you can't really make an MMORPG on BYOND...it just DOESN'T HAPPEN...get 500 people, and you'll get me to admit to it...and I mean at a TIME, and constantly :-P

It doesn't have to be that massive to be fun >.>

Though I would really hope for 500 people at once I know it probably wont happen. But seriously it'll work with alot less people than that, though the more people the more fun ^^.

I didn't say it had to be massive to be fun, I said it had to be massive to be an MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game).

Well massive for BYOND, and I would think this is the closest category it would fall under.

It's been proven to be quite possible. You would have to use a multi-server setup and distribute players among different servers. (server 1 is world 1, server 2 is world 2, you go between them via a portal or some such.)
Sounds like an idea I had for a game, but mine was more explicitly militaristic, i.e. you could only hold military positions (no civilian roles). I like your idea better personally. And I would volunteer help if it weren't for this whole college thing... I've hardly got time to work on my active project.

How do plan on handling the launch of the game as far as populating the world? CPUs throughout? Blank slate? That was one of the interesting parts to me.

I'll be pumped to play it when it's done.

Well, what you've described is a good setting - there's nothing wrong with that, you can still use that. The tricky bit, in my opinion, is coming up with a good game to match the setting.

Ask yourself questions like:

What's the significance of being a pirate - how would it make my game interesting?
What's the significance of being able to build a town - why would this be a game I enjoy playing?

Things like that. You could just put together a game described exactly as you said it was in your OP, but there comes down to a certain question of why that may make you realize that what you're really looking for in Your Own Net Dream is something completely different.
