If I could have it my way, it'd definitely be pixel based. I always kinda pictured it playing like Link to the Past. That would be perfect. Would make fighting more interesting since the paths wouldn't be so predictable. I can only do so much to eliminate the grid visually, but it doesn't help that the player is still bound to it.
