Hail.
As I've been working on my RPG, and I wanted to simplify things for myself in the long run, I've been apt to think ahead this time around (this being the fourth re-working of the game, since may '07)! I've come up with an idea, albeit not revolutionary, but I wanted to get some feedback before I start on it.
To simplify the art of PvP (which I find rather essential in an RPG of any sort), I've sorted my players and monsters into two categories of mobs. I've designed the attacking so they both run the same procs, and essentially use the same formula. Again, not revolutionary. I found that to test it entirely, I'd need to design the equipment system! That brings me to my current idea: do you think monsters should have, equip, and ultimately drop equipment? Obviously, this is a yes for most people, because most people enjoy spoils.
This is a rather long-winded way of asking: how would you do it, if you wouldn't do it this way?

Monsters could drop damaged armor, so you would have to repair it to claim your spoils. That's all I got >_>

Not a very RPG idea, but I once played a pretty good game called Iron Pheniox, while not a RPG, it had a clever way for equips. They theroy was to have a first person shooter style of dropping an picking up equips. Basicly a player started with a knife/sword, then ran around the stage to the weapon spawn points claiming stronger weapons. When you die, you drop your weapon then respawn with the again standard knife/sword.
You can possibly apply this in a way? Its more of an arena type drop/claim situation for equips but thats no saying you can't scrap this idea xP |
Its pretty simple, humanoid monsters, should be able to carry and use equipment. The quality should also be randomly generated on the monster. And if the monster is killed, you should be able to loot said equipment. Also, equipment should take damage, so players aren't looting polished brand new gear off a beaten and worn enemy

To be completely honest, I did not intend on having a durability system in my game. Though, I think I could still apply this. Perhaps "Damaged Sword" or "Broken Platemail", take them to a blacksmith, and he will repair them for a fee, based on the item strength. Would that be an alternative solution to a durability system, d'ya think? |

Of course, I think that would be a reasonable alternative to then having straight out durability.
