I won't say much about this. The chechen rebel warlord Shamil Basayev has been killed today, for real this time. His history for Chechen Independence ranges from helping defend the country in the first chechen war against the russians (a war in which Chechnya won, btw). He had several positions over the years including Prime minister at some stage and coming in second in the presidencial race to Aslan Maskhadov.
During the second war, he had organised the Moscow theater siege, in which 130 of the 900 hostages were killed. Not by the seperatists, but Russia "saving" the hostages by using a powerful knockout gas that killed some, but killed a lot more as they decided to STACK, yes STACK the unconcious bodies they were saving on top of each other in lorries. He also confesses to the Beslan School Siege, which was more bloody, and a lot more unclear on who actualy killed the children, as the camras didnt see any of the fighting inside.
The death of Shamil Basayev is a double edged effect, the government is even more underground now than it was before, and Basayev is the main militant leader thats been there pretty much from the start. On the other hand, he was a self-professed terrorist and enjoyed fighting the Russians for revenge, a common reason for Chechens to take up the fighting.
