would it be posible to get a pixel artist to make tiles and icons for free or do most artist need to be paid?

There are quite afew who swing both ways.
Some people will icon for you for free but almost 80% of them will want to see your project and what your doing with it before even beginning. Which usually means making your own icons even if there stick figures. just to showcase your game to artists that will get you support if the idea is there. Others will do it for pay and as far as im concerned if im paying them they don't need to see any form of showcase or demo unless i deem it so.. cause well there getting payed to work. I currently have one iconner that ive known for awhile that is pretty decent and hes iconning for my game that was originally gonna be a fangame but ive since swayed to original thanks to my own mindset and Divine Travellers. so long story short, it really depends on you. |

I do very good pixel art, but very good doesn't come quickly. Even if they do want to work for free, try to think of some compensation to give them for their hard work. In-game bonuses for example. It doesn't have to be GM, just something that other players would look at and awe. My favorite are pets that follow you around and awesome armor recolors xD |
guahaha you picked up on that little hidden joke :p
yea ingame bonuses are always nice, Im not a big fan of giving out adminship to iconners though. if they other features that they can provide within the game like Mapping insight, good support set for managing player base and other notable aspects then id consider it. but only to the point of a level 3 gm (i use 6 levels, last 2 being for co-owners/owner) and each level gets access accordingly. "rare" items are always a good addition for help and can be used for incentives so much.. Like if you use an enchanting system for weapons or armour you could give them the highest level stones which don't fail or something. all depends on the game i guess. But yea as what has been stated so far in this thread you should be set for anything. |
Why people have different levels of admin/GM is beyond me. If you're going to give someone administrative powers over a game you are going to trust them dearly, so why restrict their power? If you have a game with more than a 1:10 GM/player ratio you've almost certainly got way too many GMs. I say "almost certainly" because it might be wise to have different GMs in different timezones.

Well i believe in multiple levels because its online.. and unless the admin base is entirely friends how can you trust them? You can't exactly.
And the reason i find it better to have multiples is purely a personal choice and makes it easier to track them, because if your using people you have came to trust/like as moderators you still wanna gauge there abilities. Albeit this is an entirely personal opinion and as with many other aspects in game design people have different opinions. If you look at many online mmorpg's they also use multiple levels. im simply doing the same. Chat mods, Support mods. and the other 4 are just for governing purposes which are closely related but slightly different. 3 is used to see if the person is fully trustable and not going to abuse the powers in the long run as level 4 where 95% of admin verbs are unlocked. ~Midget |
I make it a point not to give out Combat bonuses to people for special occasions. I like everyone to play fairly. This includes better gear and power-ups. I would probably add an increased XP gain for the team, just as a small party favor, but once you cap your level, you're no more powerful than anyone else. Basically, Aesthetics are the way to go!

Hmm i see no problem in giving rare items to players for special occasions so long as said items are globally available that is. so that there not mutually exclusive. Then ofcourse colourings and what not
|
Not that this is related to the topic, but I see no reason why there can't be 'event items,' which are impossible to get outside of events, which may be recolors, revamps, or completely new items with a given set of effects for someone who wins a tournament, does a special quest, participates in an event (holiday event or random event hosted by an adminstrator). It could mesh well with the game's economy (if it has one), or it could provide some sort of bragging rights to the person (hey guys, I won this event!).
