I'm looking into developing a game, but I want it to be different then those crappy ones that use rips or use themes like naruto (not that I'm against these naruto, bleach, dbz etc. but most of them suck). I already have a good idea for the type of game I'll make and some cool features, but I just wanted to know if there is anything in particular that some of you would like to see, or things that you think should be changed that are in most BYOND games.
SN:
I know that coding a big project takes a team, alot of work and dedication, and not to jump straight into something like this without gaining expirience and thorough knowledge of DM

Well, if you're still learning, then you should just practice.

I want a good PVP game with a decent interface, above average pixel work, a good storyline won't hurt. Don't make it like GOA or BLN(games that give anime games a bad name) where they just throw you into PVP with no explanation to what you are doing.

You're already looking too deeply into it. Just make something, and anything, and see what direction it takes you. It doesn't matter what you do (although there are the advised routes of "not a fangame" and the like), just produce something, update it often, and blog often about it.

Here's an interesting idea that came to me about 30 seconds ago.
In SimCity, you play as the mayor of a city, making all of the decisions. In BYONDCity, you (and as many as n other people) play as a city council. Everyone has the ability to make some decisions. For instance, one player makes the zoning decisions, one player builds roads, one player sets tax rates, and so on. They must coordinate policy through chat. For example, if one player raises the gasoline tax in order to reduce traffic and improve air quality, another player had better be building more transit and less roads. Here's another idea that I have been kicking around for a few weeks, though have made no plans yet to act on. A Civilization-like game, except instead of playing as the ruler of one of the civilizations, you play as an Illuminati-like organization that secretly controls each civilization's policies. Your ability to influence policies is limited, and so you have to use your limited influence to accomplish your goals, whatever they may be. |
I already know what I'm going to make, I was just asking if there was any feature in particular that you would want to see in a BYOND game. I've been looking at other games and I thought of basic things that you do in them that I think should be made better. So even if it's not an idea for something, I really want to know if there is something you wished was designed differently than what is in typical games

Ah, I see. It's tough to answer the question without knowing more about your idea, but one thing comes to mind. Try, as much as is feasible, to give your game an original look.

1) Set Battle System. There is no need to level up on a byond game. They have MMOs for grinding. Set your game apart from the rest by creating a battle system based on skill or luck(preferably skill)...like a short match of a card game.
2) Social Status. Don't add barriers such as ranks unless someone actually EARNED them through GAMEPLAY. It pains new players to see a person taking a rank who has the same skill level as them. 3) Player interaction. Make it where player have to rely on eachother for support. Like an economy system based on classes. Hunters get the materials and Metal, Mages make spells out of certain materials, blacksmiths make weapons out of metals, and the tailor makes leather armor from materials. The Merchant is the person who sells these goods for profit. Etc etc. 4) Avoid Unfair Advantages. Avoid things that create a barrier in the player community. Ranks is one of the few advantages. These things include special skills that only a few people can get to, or limited resources in one area while another has plentiful. 5) Keep Players Engaged. Since byond games are pretty flexible, it would be nice to keep a world updated with puzzles. Like if you were making a game like...i dunno...zelda? It wouldn't kill to add in some more legends, myths, and dungeons that players can explore. 6) The U - word. I mentioned it in #5, but this is very important. Updating a game keeps it fresh. Without updates, players can get tired of the game at a certain period of time |
I don't mean to necro this, however, when you're looking at what kind of game you make, it depends on your audience. YOU have to choose what we see in YOUR game. However, selecting a target audience would be good; BYONDers like a variety of things, as you can see lots of people like RPGs, Animes, Action, zombie games, defense games, and a big huge mashup of games.
We cannot decide for you what should be in your game unless we're testing it, I mean what are we supposed to design the concept of the game for you? Choose an audience and after that make the game, then if people don't like a certain part of it, they'll nag you, and you fix it. That's why pretty much every game has a group of testers who nit-pick at small things. |
