also i think BYOND should have a web page list(not just the games list)

Why not just the games list? Every game can post a web site there. At any rate, I'm sure people will link to each other's stuff more and more as time goes by.

Jobe Net is going to be in the running with GameSpy as soon as i get a server..

Dantom offers web site hosting for a very reasonable fee!

also note that any claim of Jobe Net is void unless it is disclaiming any other claim. this last sentance is an example of a non void claim of disclaimer.

Ha! :)

Au contraire. Dantom's fees are completely unreasonable. Any reasonable person would charge more. :)

at the rate i am at now i would need a dedicated server or two.. or three.. i have about 48 gigs of HTML and pics set up to be my server (as soon as i get one [dose anyone know how to turn a PC into a server? is it posible?]) and i dont think that dantom would like it too much if i tryed to put an entire network on there server(i am nearly ready to start.. and i was hopeing to use BYOND like GameSpy uses store bought games.. but mine would be free! so i wonder who would get more players durring the off season (like summer or right befor cristmas or things like that..) i mean i would have enof income to pay my workers and pay for the server and also live on but i would not be able to do afford copyrights to store games (unless they really suck) so as mars needs capitalists we must also wait untill the mars planitary stations are ready to take on the traffic of capitaist comerse.. so Dan and Tom im waiting on you.. and as soon as you have the final version of BYOND out i will also buy about 4 boxes of your book(but be asured you ARE going to give them to me at a wholesale price!!) so please hurry.. im just sitting around liveing on government money waiting till you have this stuff done.. how do you expect me to make tons of cash without a box to pull it out of?

Un-Jobe-ly concise disclaimer: I know relatively little about servers. But I'll babble and if someone can correct me, so much the better.

BSD (linked above) is a version of Unix, and is the version that's said to be the most secure against cracking/hacking/whatever.

Part II: you can download a free, commercial-quality web server from apache.org. I've actually been able to set up the Windows version by myself and get it running, which, if you know my loathing for configuration-type stuff, is pretty amazing.

Part III: if you want anything more than static pages, you need to use CGI or servlets or JSP or PHP or something else. BYOND's CGI library is probably about the easiest you can get in this regard, though Python is not too far behind (another thing I've actually successfully configured!).

Part IV: you need a high-bandwidth line. DSL is supposed to be a good connection for home use, but good luck finding a provider, and if you find one, hope it isn't in the process of going bankrupt. Don't know much about cable modems except that the local Time-Warner outlet hasn't exactly bent over backwards to respond to my queries. I read somewhere today that IDSL, whatever that is, can be purchased for $70 a month or so. I think a T1 line, which is what you'd need for a real heavy-traffic site, is 300 to 600 bucks a month.

Here end my misconceptions about Web site hosting.
