For example: If, in the map editor, I place a 'grass' turf, than place a mostly transparent 'flower' turf above it, compile and run the project, than try to read the turf at that location, I can only find the 'flower' turf, even though the 'grass' turf still shows through. I need some way to keep track of the underlay turfs as well.
Any suggestions? Or am I doomed to making different turfs for each possible combination of turfs? (or giving up on the .dmp saving)

Good observation.
Currently the map-turfs are not loaded into the underlays[] (or overlays[]) structure, but they probably ought to be. It's on the List.
