My friend told me this version allows less lag for bigger games, is that true?

The engine certainly has a few new nifty tricks to lower CPU usage, sure. See: http://www.byond.com/forum/?post=1375479

The removal of step_delay automatically configuring probably helped quite a bit, too. I think Lummox mentioned the code being outdated and it could have caused some performance issues instead of, as intended, doing good.

So yeah, optimizations seem to be fairly frequent, and it would probably be in your best interest to keep your game / server up to date if you run one.
