Now that I think about it, Eddie Brock is supposed to be kind of a doppleganger to Peter Parker (in noir standards) so it's not that surprising that they are using Topher Grace, who is similar to Tobey Maguire in many ways.
And of course venom is in this movie...why else would they bother going with the storyline of Peter Parker being covered in the Symbiote and introducing Eddie Brock?

I, too, grew up on the 80's/90's animated series, and judge the movie based on it. So far I give the movie a D in comparison. The cartoon was just better.
Anywho, yeah, Venom was a symbiote, Carnage was too, but it does appear that Carnage will appear in this newest movie, but that is to be expected. Carnage didn't show up till about the middle of the symbiote ordeal. Perhaps this will segway into the next movie, like you suggested, which will have Brock as Venom and that crazy dude as Carnage(I can't remember who it was, just remember that he was less than sane before the symbiote. |
OH yeah... I forgot that little Eric Forman was playing Brock...lol
So yeah, the guy I suspected was Eddie in the trailer actually is Eddie (though to be honest, he looked so unlike the Topher Grace I'm familiar with from That 70's Show, that I didn't recognize him until I just watched it again to check)... Anyways, though, just having both Brock and the Symbiote in the movie doesn't guarantee Venom at all... They could just as easily included these elements simply to set it up for a later movie... Because, again, Venom requires a lot of attention, and has a lot of backstory and such, so splitting it up makes much more sense than trying to shove it all into one movie that will already contain one or two other villains, all of the Black Suit Spidey story, and internal conflicts that ensue, fighting the Symbiote off, setting up the Brock character, and his rivalry with Parker, etc, etc) So yeah, Venom is most likely planned, and they're setting the groundwork for it... But don't expect him to play a major role in Spiderman 3... |
Point one: The movies have been closer to the Ultimate Spiderman story so far, and in that, Eddie is scrawny.
Point 2: There is no infor and little likelyhood that Carnage will appear. And again, since it is closer to the Ultimate storyline, no, Carnage is NOT a symbiote. Point 3: As people have said, Venom will most likely not be featured. He will appear in the end maybe, but that's about it. |
As for the theory on Topher Grace, I think they were trying to make Venom as an equal to Parker. Since Tobey isn't exactly built, neither is Topher.

They appear to have gone with the Symbiote storyline (IE the black goop covering him), and they even show the scene where he... Wait: SPOILER ALERT!!!!
This is really only a spoiler if you haven't seen the 80's/90's animated series Venom storyline, though, but potential spoiler anyway:
As I was saying, they even show the scene where he removes the Symbiote by hitting it with sound from the churchbell... The Symbiote is noise-sensitive, and the bell ringing hurts it enough that he can free himself from it...
I'm not sure if this storyline is used in the comics (or if so, which particular series, since they've all got their own version it seems), but this was how it was handled in the old (well, "middle", since there's one older) cartoon...
END SPOILER
I also like that this seems to reinforce my assertion that Jameson's son brought the Symbiote to Earth, signaled by his unnatural leap from dock to platform at the end of 2 when he went to get Mary Jane... This was how the cartoon handled it as well... The Symbiote came back from outer space with him (though in the cartoon, it was a bit more dramatic, with a shuttle crash and all)
Anyways, though, Venom is definitely a possibility... However, I still don't think he'll make it in this movie (perhaps only a flash at the very end, as the cliffhanger to the next one, if there is a next one)
There seems to be too much going on already for Venom to make a worthy appearance in this installment (you need an entire move devoted to him to do it justice, and this one's simply got too much other stuff crammed in to pull that off)
However, if I'm not mistaken, I think I see Eddie Brock in this trailer (the guy in the brown hooded sweatshirt who is looking up and says "Parker..." about halfway through the trailer seems like a very likely candidate), which further sets up the Venom storyline...
But again, I simply don't think they'll put Venom himself into this movie (unless, like I said, they throw in a shot of him at the end the instant before the credits role, and the rock music kicks in)...
