I know this isn't really the right place to post this, but I'm just wondering how some of you learned to program, and if any of you can share any links of guides or tutorials that has helped you, besides the DM guide(Yes I read it, but something else could help me better.) Currently I've been learning from rip sources for a while, now realizing that isn't the best way to learn, seeing as most rip sources have horrible coding, so learning that way could really screw me up in trying to learn.
Anyways, posts with links will be appreciated :D thanks! And sorry for posting this in the wrong section.

Sorry about that, fixed it! (:

I'm pretty sure I started with zilal's tutorial. But that's a little dated and might be too basic for you.
You can also go to the resources page and search for beginner. For more advanced stuff...I have mostly learned from libraries, articles, and the help forum. Try to take your examples from the best programmers in the community. I don't want to name people to avoid getting into an argument about whether XYZ is the best programmer, but you can mostly tell who they are by browsing the help forums. here's a good compilation of lots of stuff: http://www.byond.com/developer/articles/resources (A few of my favorites from that list are Usr unfriendly, Bit Flags, and Datums are our friends) |
Thanks you two for what you've posted so far :D and yeah I've already seen Zilal's and the angelfire one. Thanks for the other links though!

The Resource Repository (Magicsofa linked to it) contains links to many tutorials. It's a stickied post that you should've seen on your way to creating this thread.

I was ( got demotivated) using the dm book and would read a chapter and then try to make a small game based off of what was in the chapter + previous chapter info only.

As I don't see anyone mentioning the post, there's a long list of developers talking about how they learned/are learning how to program stickied in the off-topic section.

The DM Reference is there for you to use, so there's no harm in having an idea and then using the reference to find out how to do it.
If you want to do something specific or just browse resources that have been made available by other developers then try looking here.
