Is it me or is there a significant amount of unavailable games on BYOND that have been neglected for years? Why does this happen? Why won't or can't people finish their games?
Because developing BYOND games is a hobby, people have no obligation to finish hobby work.
And there's an awful long history (nearly a decade and a half) of users who have come and gone.

That tends to happen as people "grow out" of BYOND. Half of the teenagers who once dominated BYOND's userbase, playing/owning DBZ rips and whatnot, are now literally adults, potentially with children of their own, and all kinds of other adult concerns (like jobs, rent/mortgage/etc.) that prevent them from even thinking about returning to BYOND activity.

So, there's a lot of "empty houses" on the block.
I'm both an adult and finish my games. One game should be finished this month.
I just don't like people starting work and especially promising to finish and not finishing it.
As has already been said, most developers here see this as a hobby. As such, it takes a back seat to most other things.

I'd much rather put hours of time into studying towards my degree than spend said time working on some of the many, many, partially completed BYOND projects I have on my computer. When I have some actual free time during the week, there are other things I'd rather do than programming.

Enough time passes and a lot of people just drift away completely.
Well if they won't finish it there's no reason for them to create a hub. I only create hubs for games ready to be tested and played. They also make promising games that people look forward to and then stop them suddenly. Not cool.

This is just the nature of game development in general, even from big name developers. Titles get announced, then cancelled, scrapped, abandoned, and otherwise just never come to fruition quite frequently.

I never seen it happen that often.

That's less than 10% of all ps3 games. But I think on BYOND there are much more than less than 10% of cancelled games.

Because it's an indie platform, and so there's a lower investment, and so, lower loss to cancellation? This is quite normal.

You're talking about BYOND?
I'm talking about Indie development in general. It's just on say ... Unity, you don't have as good a visualisation of these ditched projects as you do on BYOND.
Well I don't like these ditched projects. I saw some anime titles I wanted to play but they're all ditched.
It is a shame, but that's life.
All this time I have been on BYOND releasing projects, I have never created a hub for unreleased projects (with some exceptions). One of these exceptions include SkyDrop Delivery which didn't have a release till a few months later.

Another exception was various test hubs I made in the past to test out new features (deleted now of course). Some of the hubs I have created in the past no longer have downloads due to missing files.

I have been on BYOND since being 15 years old. I still program for BYOND, though I have been working on a C++ port of SkyDrop Delivery. Thinking about it, I have been on BYOND almost 10 years.
@Bandock: Wow.. you're old. .__. I'm coming there soon, though. :/.. My knees are starting to sound like rice crispies when I do squats.

@OP: I recently talked about this without even reading this post. Apparently, I quit my games because I have no motivation. Who visits my games? Who says, "How's your game going?" Who compliments me on my effort? Nobody. So, I feel like I'm not getting anywhere. However, I've found a project where people log on daily and say, "Hey, you got something nice going here. I remember coming here when it was first released. Now you have all these nice features. Keep up the work!" Now I'm eager to continue updating. Just waiting for Ss4toby to send me back the damn files.... -_-...

How about create games for fun for yourself?
That's when I have half-a'd games that I'd play for a few secs and it would never be seen again. I don't like single playered games all that much anyways. I'm a multiplayer lover. Why do you think I joined the BYOND "community"? I'd prefer making games people love. Instead of only making it for them. I'd rather make it for both them and myself. An agreement that we all can share. So I love my hobby when other people love the hobby I do. And man.. I just can't add enough features to my Shell Server utility. ._. I want to add more as we speak. But I can't -_-... toby..
