I think the idea's to make games, not just a demo or tech demonstration.

Well, I'm out.

Likelihood of project submission: I can't say for sure, as the last few contests I've tried to participate in didn't end in a submission for me. I'll try, though.
Would you prefer it if the contest was extended to 7 days or are you content with 4?
I really don't care. I'm fine with 4, but I'm not going to make a fuss over an extension.

Yup, that's the goal of the contest. I can't say I personally want to see demos, but more-so what you can do with the demo in an actual game.
I'd like to with everyone good luck on the contest. As per usual, I won't be participating. d:

$1 per hub fan

I'd avoid that. Not too long ago, we had a user spam-create keys for whatever reason. I'd imagine it wouldn't be hard for some users to spam the pager or spam-create keys for the sake of having hub fans. If someone is dedicated enough, four days is more than long enough to cost you some serious cash.

I should clarify that I'm not pointing at any of the contestants, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

Regarding that "No themes" thing, or starting at any point, I disagree with both. Some people can take much better advantage of the added time then others (unless the contest was significantly long). It just discourages others who start late to even bother doing anything when those who start early show off how much they have done. And with the idea of "No themes", I just like having the constraint of theme, it makes me think of a game on the spot, rather then planning everything ahead of time, or making a tech demo.
It would be nice if this contest had a requirement of using animate() in some way while providing documentation for whatever effects were achieved.

if it looks better than a narto rip it's using animate()

Well, I think using animate() is kind of unspoken/implied. A contest intended to showcase 500's new features sort of demands the use of it's most important addition... (of course, using mouse tracking is another, far less cool, option)

But I do like the idea of requiring some documentation of how the developer achieved whatever effects they include. Perhaps not specific code (after all, if someone works out how to pull off something incredible; why should they be forced to give up their trade secrets?) it could be as vague as "I use an animate() call to slowly rotate the background, while using a set of objects on top of the background that are animate()d to pulse in time to the BGM, then blah, blah, blah" just to at least give some idea of what was done.
Man... I would really like to do this contest. My son's birthday is the 5th and I have my kids from the 4th to the 6th afternoon... 7 days would be the best option, at least for me. Anyone that might want to team up, hit up my Skype: drbrankenstein.

I would say 7. Or maybe 14?

The thing is, I don't think this should be "start whenever you want without themes." However I do agree that it should not be about how fast you can work. Maybe something like two weeks would be more suitable?

I do vote for a "finish by x date" though.
Perhaps we could implement an IRC channel for the contest?

DivineTraveller claimed #byond in irc.esper.net, so we could use that.

Still in need of reviewers that don't plan to enter the contest, or at least, are fine with excluding themselves from prizes. If you think you can do this, send me a pager message and we'll talk.
If none come forth, we could partake in democratic voting, where the entrants pick which of the other entries they like the most. They would not be able to vote on their own entry of course.

If the point system needs to be dispersed in terms of entry attributes, such as gameplay, audio, fits the theme, etc., tell each entrant to pick which game they would think has the best attribute of each. Voters could pick the same game for all of the attributes.

If entry attributes are weighted, the voter's choice will award that entrant that many points (Gameplay 10 points, Audio 5 points, Fits the theme 12 points, etc).

Those who did not enter would not be able to vote on other entries. If an entrant does not vote, they are disqualified, and points must be reallocated to other entrants.

Possible Entrant voting form:
  • Voter's name
  • Voter's Entry
  • [10 pts] Whose entry had the best Gameplay?
  • [5 pts] Whose entry had the best Audio?
  • [12 pts] Whose entry fit the theme(s) the most?

End Brainstorm. This is all conceptual of course.
I'll help judge, it would be a conflict of interest to enter and I've got work to do anyway.

I want to see SSGX and Ter13 and Flick join this one, since it seems like their activity has skyrocketed since v500 released. :)

Well, since I've been requested... I'll see what I can do. Gonna try to finish up my current contracts and then see if I can actually get something in before the deadline. I'm bad at that.

Would you prefer it if the contest was extended to 7 days or are you content with 4? For me personally, 7 days is better since my work/family schedule is pretty brutal. But I'm fine with either one. Will just depend on what my schedule is at the time.
