do you think that the makers of UO went around asking the makers of DIABLO for tips on a battle system? i think not.

I could ask them if you like, I happen to know one of the lead programmers from the Ultima series.

but becuase of a hacker which ripped it out my computer (you are all tired of hearing me say it, i know, just give me some time, i MIGHT forget about it someday).

Actually, I'm not tired of hearing about this... I'm curious to hear how it happened. I've heard of hackers destroying an entire PC's usability... but "breaking in" and stealing one specific file is new to me, except in Hollywood. Unless you're using some kind of file-sharing system.

I used my laptop on the school network once but forgot to turn file sharing off in the network settings. That was a mistake! All my documents folders were gone, the webpages I had worked on, and half my program files. Fortunately I had backups of everything that was only a couple weeks old.

The hard lessons are the ones that stick with you best. Now I only turn file sharing on in my home network long enough to transfer specific data, then turn it off again so I never forget again.

Eg/ I made a battle system. I got item overlays working. But now I'm struggling with getting the items to change your stats when equiped, and still actually appear on you.

Just an idea. =)

Im sorry, but I strongly disagree with this idea. It would be great to give Noobs more and better examples, but releasing the source for games would just cause more copy paste games. Im really getting tired of seeing people making games off snippets they find on the forums. I can not tell you how many people ive seen ask for help on the forums, and when somebody replied with an example, the noob just replied that the compiler returned some errors when he tried to paste it in. If people release the source for their games, we would begin to see a lot more copy-paste programmers.

Hmm, well I think he told me the dude gave him a trojan. Trojans aren't really considered hacking though. I have been threatened several times that some dude would give me a trojan and steal DBZ-Spar off my comp, but you gotta be insane if you think im dumb enough to fall for a trojan, especially after a threat like that.

Its called the Matrix virus. every time you get on the internet it emails your IP to the hacker and then covers it up. if you hit ALT+CTRL+Del and actually figure out what the name of it is you can turn it off.

now when the hacker has your IP he can use his program that run along side the Matrix to retreave and files he wants.he can also DO anything he wants.. the matrix is like a usr of the computer who happens to be on a differnt computer.

I hade this virus once. The hacker opened a black window with a skull in the back and named it "Hacker Chat". sure verry funny... fourtunatly it was one of my friends trying out his new virus but still...

As far as i know.. the matrix virus is not on any computers.. it is a home made virus.

but anyhow.. it can be done..

Ah, it's a script kiddies program! Yay! It's just like SubSeven or BlackOriface by the sounds of it. About IP's, - I suppose this would have to be the only advantage a dial up modem has over cable - your IP changes every time you dial up.

To be honest I don't think it would help much. 99.9% of people would just take the code and release it as their game, without understanding it. If people can copy and paste (or even better, just hit Build->Compile) they will do so, then the person who provided the source code is forever stuck with: "I'm using your game code but it doesn't work. Fix it."

This I know from experience.

well... i only did this sortof thing with one game. and then it was more
"I cant find this proc in your 70 pages of code. could you tell me where it is?"

Ah yeah, what I ment is that it's simply harder to hack a dial up modem as the moment they log off any progress made is lost, but with a cable you can just keep on working on them, which is why its incredibly important to have a firewall if you have cable.

BTW Subseven sends the "hacker" and ICQ message whenever an "infected" victem connects to the net. Rather nasty.

Personally, if I'm going to get 'hacked' I'd prefer it to be by someone stupid enough to leave an email address or ICQ number in the code. I can't make ICQ or hotmail cough up the IP address of anonymous users, but the FBI can. ;)

=) The problem is that you can get programs called "socks" or something, that either (A)disguise your IP OR (B) make your IP look like someone elses. This means completely random people can get blamed for things they no nothing about.

My firewall (BlackICE defender) picks up dozens of people trying to scan my computer everyday, but the thing is, these are mostly just script kiddies using programs to scan hundreds of computers at a time looking for one they can get into with their limited or non existant skills. In the 6months or so Ive been using BlackICE I've never had a hacking attempt directed soly at me (unless of course they were so good BlackICE didn't even pick it up ;) ).

Yes, you can disguise your IP, but if your computer is trading information with a remote computer your real network address is in there somewhere. The problem is sorting through all the layers to find the actual IP.

As someone noted earlier this was directed at FIREking specifically to get these files, so it was someone he knew and not a random hacker. I hardly think a truly elite hacker would be after his DM code. I wouldn't be surprised if his little brother (or other sibling/friend pest) did it while he was out someplace.

FIREking, ask yourself who had motivation to steal your files and who had access to your computer. If it was from a remote source they also have to have some computer skill. If you know who has some of your code now, ask them where they got it.

If you can get them to mail you, you can grab their IP from the mail header, even with Hotmail. Through ICQ, all you have to do is send them a message, then run netstat to view all open connections. One of 'em will be the person you just messaged. You can also get it to tell you all ports wating for connections on your computer, which is a dead giveaway for trojans, especially 12345 and 31337. Yes, IP numbers can be disguised, but anyone that uses trojans won't know how. That you can be sure of.

That what happened to DBZ. Imagine, 10 more DBZ games! Each asking "why doesn't the cut and paste code by ABC work? I have downloaded it yesterday!"

I guess then, that BYOND's community's objective, isn't to help others MAKE games, but rather help them LEARN the language. Theres nothing wrong in that, but the opinions of most people who posted here do seem to be opposed to the idea of people being able to make games at the click of a few buttons. I guess then that if anyone want to be able to do that, we direct them over to a little program called RPGMaker2k & 95.

It takes a loooong time to make a game. If I help you make a game, I don't have time to make my own. If I help you learn, though, we both win. Remember that even the so-called "gurus" are just regular users, with no special access, abilities, or priveliges that you don't also have.

I'm dead opposed to that in BYOND. Complexity = Power. Byond is harder to use than RPGMaker because you can do a lot more with it... less is hard-coded. If we all got together, wrote "The Ultimate BYOND Code Engine" and released it... that would destroy one of the beautiful things about BYOND, because all the games would start to look alike.

I encourage diversity and creativity. There is nothing wrong with systems to click a few buttons and make a game, but such a system severely limits the creation process. It also makes for boring games if they are all alike with very few innovations.

How many people really play the games other people make with RPGMaker? I've played a couple and they didn't hold my interest long at all.

I've been playing DBZEO during my breaks from working on my own game. But I gave up on it last night when I lagged out and logged back on to find I had been killed. And in that game you take huge penalties for dieing and I really can't be stuffed rebuilding my character.

Hense RPGMaker being called that, it is limited to making only RPGs. You can make some good, or atleast popular RPGs with it (I know I did), but it's completely hopeless for anything else, though I did once make a VERY basic space invaders game to prove it could be done). BEYOND meanwhile can be used to do a great many number of different game types, which is why I threw away RPGMaker for this (actually it's cause I wanted to make an online game and I had no other way to host it, but that doesnt sound as good). =)
