I think the DMI editor in DreamMaker is quite sufficient for its purpose. If you want to do extensive editing, you'll want a better external editor anyway. I only use DreamMaker to import my icons and set the mask. Everything else is done externally because it's so much more powerful and flexible. Plus with resize, the simplest algorithm likely to give very poor results, especially at such low resolutions as 32x32. Best left to a good editor that's already done the work of implementing a good algorithm. I think the best "must have" feature for the icon editor is the ability to import (not necessarily use directly in a game) other image formats besides BMP. That and maybe more sophisticated batch import capabilities. Oh yeah, and automatically chopping up large images, too. ;-) Leave the real editing to the pros. |

Photoshop... what a dismal program
Do you know what I use? Good old MS Paint. There, you have select, resize, unlimited graphic area, all the colors you want... Just copy and paste! Do you know what another nice thing is? With MS Paint, screenshots are quite milkable. I use screen shots from games on my sony and coputer all the time, for my Logo games. Bitmaps may be large, but they are easily handled with MS Paint. With such an easy option, why choose Photoshop? |

beautiful, just beautiful
i am too a MS paint fanatic such as lord of water, MS PAINT RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ITS THE KING OF ALL GRAPHIC PROGRAMS!!!!!!!!!!!! why the hell would i go out and buy photo shop, or get it illegally for that matter, when i could just use MS paint which is easy, free, and fast. No loading, no crap, its straight up drawing, just like a box of crowns(spelling) and a peice of paper. |

What, then, do I use for my special effects?
JSAC Paint Shop Pro, of course! It, too, is packed full of features. You can add everything from "moonbeams" to "marble" to your already created graphic. The best of all? It's about 20 dollars. Quite somthing, compared to Photoshop's $700! |

Oh yeah, and automatically chopping up large images, too. ;-) BYOND actually does this already with bmp's. Say I have a 64x64 bmp and I do this: turf icon = 'myfile.bmp' icon_state = "1,1" Each turf will then display the upper right corner of the bmp! (Lower left is "0,0".) Personally, I use the icon editor whenever I can--it's very flexible and easy to use. When it isn't enough, I assist it with Paint Shop Pro, MS Paint, Amorphium, and Project Dogwaffle (lots of fun, that last one--you can find it easily with a Google search). |

Here I thought I was just being silly and irrational to not export everything to a more complicated program, draw it using almost exclusively the same tools that the Dream Maker icon editor features, then import it back in! |

That's actually not a bad idea. I'd use it, and I'm sure other people would too.
(In my case, I'd design a full-width finely detailed object for display in the inventory, and then scale it to appropriate size for displaying it on the map.)
Wow, good suggestion! ;-)
