Hello, Im new here but from what Ive seen of the games Ive played briefly they look pretty good. They remind me of the classic nintendo rpg games, which is kinda cool. Whats with all the DBZ games? ;) I searched and found BYOND because I love making games myself, however, Im traditionally a mud player but dont see any mud games hosted here. Im curious if most of the players here are mainly into the icon driven games as opposed to the classic text mud games? Would there much of a demand for a mud game here?

Thanks.
Lord of Water usually hosts a MUD style game, but its more D&D than it is a MUD. All of the DBZ games are usually wastes of time so most people don't bother with them. They are the products of 12 year olds who pump the forum regulars for code and then call it their work. *end DBZ rant* Ah well.

You bet. The reason DBZ games are currently prevalent is that, while BYOND itself isn't being actively publicized yet, a couple people have very actively publicized their DBZ games -- which brings in more and more people who want to write their own. Once BYOND and the non-DBZ games are publicized more, there should be a much better balance.

Lots of people would like playing a good text-based MUD on BYOND. I haven't yet found a text-based MUD that kept me interested, but I'd certainly try one if someone did a good job.

As Guy mentions, don't let the current set of popular games keep you from doing another kind. We'd really like to see some variety.

And in the name of promoting a non-DBZ game, check out DragonSnot if you haven't already!

Greetings! I hope you have a fun stay here at BYOND. If you are going to be programming, be sure to check out Zilal's ZBT Tutorial, its very useful. Make sure to start your projects out small and work your way up to bigger project.
Also, if your into Super Hero Games, check for "Super Hero Bash!" on the HUB. I (try to) regularly host it. I look forward to seeing your game(s). Make sure they are diffrent. They don't have to be original, just don't make it a DBZ game or Final Fantasy game. :)

So far as I know, the reason graphical games are so popular with Byond is that they're simpler to make, and byond is a Haven for unskilled programmers who are just starting out. For the most part, a decent text MUD would take more effort to make than a decent Graphical game, so they are few and far between at the moment (if they exist at all... I only know of one, and it isn't public right now.)

You also might be wary that, byond's text input is a bit difficult to work with, and that can make some interaction in a text environment more difficult. I'm hoping that'll be cleared up in the near future.

Haven't gotten around to playing with it yet, but the input type command_text should be useful for custom parsing routines that more closely resemble input methods used in text games and MUDs.

Same thought, but I haven't looked at it closely enough to really know what it could be used for...So, I figure I'm better off not talking about it.

Or we could bribe Dantom to hit the delete button on some of those DBZ games. Alright...all of them ;).
I like MUDs too, and I -- and a few other folks -- are in fact working on some, but it'll be a while before they come out. Alas!

Byond had a child!? Where was I when this was announced?

The Seed in this example refers to the glowing crystal seed which landed in the former floating city of Atlantis, before it was destroyed (since Haven wasn't really a haven, but rather a place of evil) which took out the Seed and the rest of the city along with it.

If I could just fix the bugs in Spuzzclone.dmb, I could have dozens of overworked underpaid clones programming Haven 24/7, and then BYOND would synergise with The Haven Seed, making BYOND become Haven.

Ah, the Spuzzum.dme has made copies of itself..We need to check up on your code Spuzz.

Go ahead and try it, buster! I'll beat you off with my mousepad!

(Hmm, from a person speaking of innuendo, maybe that last sentence should be rearranged.)

Umm, hehe that's sick! And no thanks I don't think I'll take you up on that.
