I think BYOND is great. It was a great idea, and is run by some pretty good guys as far as I've seen =)

BYOND is a good way to help new game developers think about game design, while not having to think so much about how hard something is going to be to code in. BYOND really lets you think more of the gameplay and objective of the game rather than other things, since there isn't tons of stuff to worry about. It is also great for people who don't want to go all out and learn all sorts of programming languages and spend a year or two working on a game.
