Will Byond ever be able to play, Mod's, Spc's, Mp3's, and other forms of music? midi's sound kinda...sucky.. Also, waves are just huge.
I don't know if they have the knowledge to, but they could write their own sound format. And make their own sound wav/music/sound converters. Also work in some kind of compression method.

Exactley!

Thats what i think they should do. They have their own code file format(its really just a txt file, but oh well), they have their own map format, their own graphical format, script format. They should have a sound format too!

Dan and Tom, something to think about!

The latest BYOND Beta (307b34) (notes) has rudimentary mp3 support. No, I didn't add it based on the commentary just now-- that was a coincidence (I'm good, but not that good!)

I checked out that Fmod library and was really impressed (would have been good to know about this a few days ago!). They have a licensing scheme we just can't afford at the moment-- I have contacted them to see where we stand on that-- but certainly this looks like a great option for the future. Until then, I'm sure people can deal with what we've got.

Heh you checked out FMOD finally ^_^ Yeah it's really easy to use and supports just about everything out there, but you'd have to pay up the wazoo to use it commercially...

Now doesnt' BYOND stand here? I mean we pay nothing to use the program, therefore using FMOD in it will not directly affect your income. But I can see how that 'if your product is not intended to make any money' can come into play. The BYOND client itself is not intended to make you money, but the system it uses does (BYONDimes, Blue book, etc). So I'm sure you guys can work out some kindof bargin ;)

Goodluck though!

I don't think so. BYOND is intended to make money, one way or another -- they just don't charge to use the actual software.
