I was wondering if there was any way to change the blackness of opacity and the edge of the map to a different icon. So instead of seeing black at the edge of the map, you see icon A or icon B or whatever. This would be kind of useful, and well ummmmmm it would be cool.
Opacity disallow you to see through things, if you weren't able to see through a wall would you see something else instead of the wall in front of you when you look at it,no. Seeing blackness is just representing the inablity to see through it.
From the BYOND 312.44 reference entry on screen_loc:

Normal layering rules apply to screen objects, so to color the background of the map (visible at least when regions of the map are blocked from view), one could create an object with a drawing layer below all other map objects and set its screen_loc to cover the whole map (e.g. "1,1 to 11,11").
