I don't know exactly what your AI challenge is yet, but to broadly say that it is beyond the abilities of people here is a bit presumptious... a close friend with a Masters in Computer Science and who has become interested in byond lately (though not officially registered yet) worked recently at Sandia National Laboratories - one of their many 'black' projects was AI development in military toys... and my current thesis in CS is Object-Oriented AI - BYOND may be my development model if I can convert general genetic-algorithms to DM code...

So to say things without a knowledge of byond member backgrounds is dangerous stuff... I'm not angry - we all just need to be careful about generic statements like this...

I don't think Lummox made a "generic" statement. He said he suspected it was beyond the capabilities of this community, and given any information to the contrary, that was a pretty good guess.

I'm sure he'll be delighted to find that he was wrong.

The challenge was basically to create a fully conversant AI--which is just about the Holy Grail of artificial intelligence. Experts in the field haven't come even close to that, so even if we had half a dozen of them in the community collaborating on a master project, it's really safe to say no one's solving that particular challenge.

Exadv would have still posed a tough challenge by aiming lower, but then it'd be one that I think a few people could do (although still not necessarily myself). There are plenty of more generic AI-related things that might be useful to develop for various games--like NPC shopkeepers who know who the best bargainers are, who's most likely to try to cheat them, etc.

Likewise, if there was someone in this community capable of developing spacecraft to land on the moon (given the budget of course), I'd still be pretty safe to say there was no one among us capable of building a ship to travel to another star within a human lifetime; they might be capable decades down the road, but not today. The groundwork for such a project has simply never been laid.

Lummox, I knew it wasn't impossible and let me elaborate. All the cars would be AI controlled with option like
call_taxi for taxis.

Yes, but that's not what I meant. The impossible part came down to dictating car speed, at least if you wanted fluid movement. That part is finally possible.
Exactly how?
Police cars automatically race speeders or maybe more importantly those who run stoplights/signs.
Personalities. Erratic behavior that does the things thst police try to stop.
If you go to ByondBwicki then StartingPoints then ExadvsChallenges will land you in my challenges.

I've posted on that page before this, which is why I mentioned the car thing specifically.

Try the AI one. If you solve any make sure you post the source somewhere. They were specifically designed to help the BYOND community. I mean who would notwant the perfect AI or a car/ship/vehicle code. The fuse code is just for a good splash screen but with electrical impulses.

The AI challenge is well beyond my capabilities, and I suspect well beyond the capabilities of anyone here. What you suggested is a level of AI that, to my knowledge, no one in the entire human race has managed to do before. It would be a worthy experiment for a doctoral thesis, by someone who knew enough about the field to hit the ground running, but it's more of a pipe dream than a challenge at this point.
Oops I overdid it there.
