I'm about to start working on some stand alone Educational programs for BYOND. And I'd like to start a new area of BYOND with a channel called, "Education" or "Educational".

LJR
That's a fantastic idea. Many of us believe that education is one area where BYOND has immense potential which is largely untapped. There's even been some talk of targetting BYOND more specifically towards the education market a few years down the line, as DM is a great first language for learning programming.

For now, as with all new BYOND channel ideas, we'll stay with what we have and continually monitor the content of the existing channels. You should submit your finished projects to the most appropriate channel currently - whether it's a particular type of game, a utility, a demo, library, tutorial (those go on BYONDscape) or whatever. If we see a substantial increase in the number of quality submissions in a particular category, we'll consider adjusting the current channels to meet those needs.

Another good example, along with your idea, is having a Sports channel, which was suggested recently. Right now there aren't enough sports games to warrant a new channel, but we'll continue to keep it in mind as new submissions are accepted.

Hmm such a shame.. getting it mixed in with all the others.. but I'll try.. If this first stand alone program does well I plan to come out with a series. I'm testing the BYOND market as well.

May i also suggest a text based channel. Because a chat is not a utility, nether is a mud or a text based game(like free non mud stuff, such as TBG, Textmud, Textmudpuddle, and byond Table Top Gaming) There just needs to be one more. I think utilitys should be more of an education thing.
In response to Scoobert
A Chat goes ironicly in the Chat channel, I suppose a text-game based channel would be good, but there are few Muds around. Even then there are very few to the quality of the hub.

MUD's are just like graphical games. Do you lump all graphical games in one uniform category called "Graphical Games"? If not, I see no reason to do the same for text-based. Although the variety of themes presented in MUD's is generally restricted to team-based strategy, or large-scale RPG's, they can go in those respective channels.

I consider BYOND Tabletop Gaming (and similar programs) a utility. It provides no rules framework, so it's not a game. It contains many RPG specific tools, so it's more than a chat. It is a utility to make it easy to bring traditional pen and paper gaming online.

There is nothing that says a utilty has to be educational. Is scandisk educational? Notepad? If we need a new channel to distiguish BTG from educational software, it should be an "Educational" channel as LordJR requested to begin with.

Ok I have now submitted my Japanese Tutor program for BYOND which is my first educational software.

LJR's Nihongo: Hiragana

I submitted it to Utilities for review, but I would much rather you create a new Educational channel/area. Also while reviewing the Utilities channel I found the following programs which I think deserve a Educational Software status as well.

LIFE 2.0 by Xooxer
Grades by English

Please consider with these 3 programs to launch a new Educational Channel.

Thanks,
LJR

Thing is, your program is not free to download, so it cannot be reviewed, we only accept things that offer a free demo, or are totally free to download. Sorry.
In response to Nadrew
Well then.. tell me the person who will be reviewing my product.
In response to LordJR
More than likely I will, BUT we don't just let people slide when they add the reviewer as a subscriber, it has to follow the guildlines (free, or free demo).
In response to Nadrew
Well under the current situation, and the fact that my game is a stand-alone 1 time download(example: Like software you buy in the store) It will never be free, nor have a free demo. If you want, perhaps for certain programs like mine, you can give the DANTOM or BYOND stamp of approval for programs like mine. My software is educational material, and Dantom chances to lose a great chance at introducing something new to the community if you fail to give it a chance. Also my program has sold 2 copies and both buyers have been more than satified with the software.

You notice most programs you buy in the store have a limited demo downloadable somewhere on the internet, I don't think it would that hard to dumb-down a version of your program for a demo.
In response to LordJR
Oh I have something that could be in there too Windoze!
Just curious if anyone at Dantom is taking this into consideration??? BYOND.Educational?

Mapster and myself set the channels, and Mapster gave a detailed response:

Thanks Deadron... I've been away for a year, and slowly finding out who does what ;)

Air Mapster,

I think the educational software that I've developed is a bit different from anything you had in mind, or has been seen here at BYOND. If you haven't had the chance to review my Japanese Tutor program I invite you to take a look at the DEMO.

http://games.byond.com/hub/LordJR/LJRsNihongoHiraganaDEMO

This is only 1 of what I hope to be many other Tutorial Programs for learning. Later this month I'm planning to release a 2nd Japanese Tutorial to teach the 2nd Alphabet of Japanese: Katakana. So not including the demo, thats 2 educational contents from me. As of right now I'm placing everything under Utilities(misguiding as it may be, as it has nothing to do with BYOND). While there I also found these programs which look to be more Educational: LIFE 2.0, Grades

Which brings me back to my question for you, if you'd consider my Japanese Tutors and these 2 programs that'd make 4 which I think should be listed under BYOND.Educational, how many more would we need for your consideration??

I also have plans to make an interactive BYOND programming Tutor, rather than the old "READ THE COMMENTS" method currently used.

Cheers!

The educational channel sounds like a good idea. Also, some food for thought:
If there was a channel, then people might think more about the possiblilities, then might make the games!

Thanks for working on these.

As Mapster said, we're very interested in highlighting Educational uses of BYOND, and will evaluate adding a channel as we see submissions.

For the moment, I'd focus on providing the content, and the channel will come when it makes sense (there are other changes in the works, and we'll probably want to batch things up and make the changes at the same time).
