Have these been done or considered before? Dantom could probably raise enough money to buy the right to use MP3 music files (Just an example) if they held a 10K challange and charged $2 per project to enter.
Im sure the judges would do their jobs for free.
I don't think it would work. They have plans to become profitable with 4.0, however.
As I recall, you only need a licence from the MPEG to create software to encode MP3s. Using software to access and play MP3s requires no licence. However, I'm not certain on that.

Im pretty clueless when it comes to licencing, thats why I used MP3s as an example. Im pretty sure that you need licence to allow your program to play MP3's, but only because I remember it being mentioned in a topic about adding MP3 support. Even then it could have been you need a licence to play one of the other suggested media types.

They do have plans to eventually become profitable, however fundraisers wouldnt be about profit, they would be about generating funds to improve the BYOND software and cover any losses Dantom have suffered.
Im not saying they would make mega bucks, but even if they only pulled in a hundred dollars they would be able to do something with that money.

Even better, after the contest they could say that they didn't like any of the entries, so they get to keep all of the money and give out no prize money at all.

Well they didn't charge $2 to enter that, but it was still incredibly lame.

Well they wouldnt even have to give out prize money, since its a fund raising event. Just give out awards (Ie, Best Solo-RPG, best word game, ect), and maybe a non-cash prize for the best in all category.
I could do a fundraising carwash in a thong.

or... we could have a sign that says TOPLESS CARWASH and have it be indoors. And inside would be Me, Gughunter, and Lummox Jr, all topless, washing cars.

Just use OGG. It's your local friendly ripoff-of-MP3 that has no licence fees or messy legal issues! It slices! It dices! It's penguin-friendly! =)

Well, Zilal might want to help out anyway. =)

I agree. Go with OGG.

And I doubt Dantom would make much at all charging $2 for a contest, because 1) Most of BYOND's user base doesn't program very well, 2) Of the ones that do, only a few of them seem to be interested in that sort of things, and 3) Of the ones that are interested, the $2 is bound to scare most of them off, just because of the effort it takes to get money flowing online.

...I feel dirty... *shudder*
