This is a simple question, and I expect a simple (or at least direct) answer. None of that "rtfm" stuff I've heard a lot on forums. FYI, I have read the manual, and I still have not found an answer.

Anyways, how would I go about having a BYOND world online (players can connect) without hosting it on my machine?
Host it on a friend's machine.
Look for info on saphiremagus's hosting which I think was posted numerous times in Classified Ads. Also you can use digitalBYOND as well for hosting, which has less downtime, is a faster server, but costs a bit more.

Also 101 Hosting which has fast service and can offer 24/7 hosting http://games.byond.com/hub/Seige1010/101Hosting

at the moment digitalBYOND is going through an upgrade period - but I'll post an announcement as soon as hosting is available.

nope! the two servers I have set aside will be 1.3ghz boxes, each with either 768MB or 1GB of RAM. should be speedy enough will the dual-speed (1.5Mbps) DSL line to handle a fair amount of graphical games. the 200mhz box will continue to run text/pbm games if needed.

O_O Wow, nice rammage, suppose it ain't DDR though.... Hell you could run a proper dedicated gaming server (summat like OFP or Quake III) on those things with a couple of 3d cards.

Do you even need 3D cards to be a dedicated server for a 3D game? I would have thought they wouldn't be necessary, as you're not actually PLAYING the game. You can host a graphical BYOND game on text-only Linux with no problems, so I don't see why the same logic can't apply. =) Unless of course the game refuses to run at all if it can't detect some 3D capability, but that's a design fault in my opinion.

Anyway, this is getting a little off-topic... heh.

Runtime 3D rendering (i.e. what everyone just calls "3D games") is client-side only. A dedicated server doesn't need (nor would it be prudent to have) a hardware-accelerated 3D video card.

It does depend on the game, though, as you hinted at.
