I have noticed that DM isn't compatible with Mp3s. I would like to know if there are any specific reasons why, and if there's not, I would like to suggest that the next version of DM be compatible with Mp3 file format.
It's either a "They only did WAV and MID in the first place and haven't had time for anything else yet" issue, or a "MP3s use a patented compression scheme" issue.
Legal issues, mainly.

There may be better sound support in the future... OGG files (like MP3, but royalty-free) and module files (like MIDI, but more flexible).

If OGG or MP3 support are ever added (or re-added as in the case of MP3), then I shall NEVER turn sound on ever again. Why? Because I promise you that 90% of the "games" out there will have some kind or rap/R&B music playing in the background (probably all illegally)...and I highly despise that type of music.

Yeah, but odds are that you could guess which games those would be just by looking at the hub entry. I often have sound off anyway, but I (and my 56k modem) fear the size of these downloads if mp3 (or a similiar format) compatibility is added.

Well...you are doing better than me. *stares at 28.8k connection*

Any game worth playing should give you an option of downloading the music or not.
Finding a way to decode MP3s for free seems to be the sticking point. The algorithm to do so is patented.

There was some talk about finally putting in MOD support, though, which would be a huge step up. MOD is really what BYOND needs more for music, although MP3 would be a boon for sound effects.

Heh, I was stuck on a 14k, twice. Once before the internet got big, and last year my 56k modem caught fire, so I was stuck on that for a while.

So there =P

I AGREE! I dont like rap music or eny MP3 music ether!
Download a MP3 converter, and convert the MP3 to .wav and tada, You can now play mp3s. Just..there..not..mp3s.

Hm. Why aren't you named ModemMonkey? Ayuck, ayuck.

Anyway, I partially agree with you on the subject, but then again, I also agree with OFD, so it all evens out. :P

There is a way to have a MP3 Format BYOND, I guess. Uhmm, it's actually MORE compressed than MP3 format. It's a WAV format using a different audio codec. I use it but it causes problems like canceling other sounds even though I have tried to change it. Any way the codec is called MPEG Layer-3. I've been using it for Dragonball Online, and I know always to compress my music/sounds.

Problem is, converting to .wav isn't a worthwhile approach for music; a minute of music in a standard 128K-bitrate MP3 is about a megabyte, which is a lot for a file in a BYOND game. The equivalent in a .wav format is about 10 MB. It's actually a lower size than an MP3 if it's downsampled to 11,025 Hz 8-bit mono format (MP3 converts normally to 44.1 KHz 16-bit stero, 16x as large), but you'll probably find 11,025 is too low a sample rate; 22,050 is probably best.

Anyway, the .wav files spit out by such a conversion would be enormous. Making them a game resource is a bad idea.

MPEG layer 3 is MP3.

To use music, I recomend MIDI files insted uv MP3. MIDI files is shorter file-length and is also beter music

Not necissarily. Depending on the sound card(and the price of said sound card), MIDI files can be beautiful, or they can be absolute garbage. It differs from file to file, too. They work allright, though.

Better music? How do you figure? A well-crafted MIDI can sound nice, but they sound different on different systems, and they don't support vocals or custom instruments. Better is the hybrid format MOD and its brethren.

I converted various MP3 files into .wav to play in my games, however every time I tried to use them, the game would crash with lag and so would my computer.
Convert the MP3 to a WAV file with a program (that'll be big) then re-compress it with the LAME encoder with the .wav extension.

- Windows Sound Recorder can also compress .wav's into WAVs in MP3 format.
