It would be nice if byond had true 3d support

No, BYOND is good the way it is. It is made for 2D tilebased online games, and works pretty good at it. If you want 3D, buy a game engine like AMP2(like 200 bucks for private use)

While a nice idea, BYOND is not meant for such a type of environment. It's meant to be a tile-based/mud/board-game-capabable game engine. It would require nearly a complete overhaul in many areas, and as Dan and Tom and the other developers involved (I think Mike H and LummoxJR are in there bug-fixing now-a-days) barely have time as it is, I think that 3D support is *way* down the list of things that BYOND needs right now.
Depending on your definition of 3D, BYOND can do it sorta, though there are a variety of problems with it. search for stuff done by OneFishDown, as well as other 3D projects (there was a nifty maze program made some time back). |
What Byond needs is to upgrade to OpenGL for its graphics displaying. Then it needs to utilize OpenGL to add in functions that increase/decrease the size of an icon, tilt it, shade it and other relevant things. That would be a great step up for Byond, and it would allow people to try and do 3D better if they wanted to do the work involved. But such things are not good only for 3D, they also are great for many other applications.
