This is just an idea I have had for awhile.
A developers version of BYOND. It would have no ties to BYOND as we know it, it would be more like the Multimedia Fusion PRO software. You could make games that did not have the current BYOND client with the pager, hub, baner, directional bars or browser, it would use accounts that were game specific, and had a dream daemon style hosting program. People would then be able to market their games over the internet and not have to be limited to BYOND keys, software, lack of a professional outlook or worry about losing people to other games. This programming package would not be free and I for one would be willing to pay $100-$150 for it. Serious programmers would have the capabilities to expand their enterprises. And do things with their games that they currently could not. Games that call themselves MMORPG's would finally become just that.

Byond would need a lot of work before you could start to make commerical games. Nobody would pay 150 dollars for it.
|
I agree. I myself would never pay even $50 for developers software that was like this. Byond is a fun software to play aorund with in my off time, but it is no where near what Id want if I was a pro.
|
Ye, it would need a lot more capabilities but I am sure if it ever went to the market it would be well worth whatever price was charged. I love the idea though.

"Did we forget to mention? The BYOND software suite is absolutely, unconditionally free." - What is BYOND?

Thus it wouldnt actually have any ties to the BYOND we all know and love but more of a MMOGMS that people could use. |
Personally, I think this is an excellent Idea. If possible they could make a different engine using the same language. I suggest this because the current BYOND engine has many flaws that make people that arent into games that much lose interest really fast. It would also allow for more compatable MMORPG. If you take out all the Windows Panels and stuff, it would make a better chance for a better MMORPG gamming.
Edit: Im currently trying to find another engine to work off of because of flaws in the engine that Ive found to be uncompatable. Also BYOND isnt a good enough enviroment to show off your abilities, many people that play can barely under stand what you did to make it so special. This is in my mind, so Im just expressing how I feel, and what could make BYOND better, and this would make BYOND much better. Once again, an excellent idea. |
For the record, the new version of BYOND (4.0) incorporates many interface features to help give games a more professional feel. There are some threads regarding this effort floating around here somewhere. A lack of time and resources has prevented us from releasing this on schedule (or even close to it), but we have not abandoned the project and are still enthusiastic about its release.
We don't plan on charging directly for BYOND, but have considered the idea of some putting in some sharewaresque features (eg: pager options) to generate some income. Currently, that isn't a part of our main business model. I hope people will continue to use and promote DM for its advantages rather than its limitations. Despite our current lull, I feel confident that we can get this product into a state where developers can be proud of both how their games look and perform. Happy coding! |
Separate or not, BYOND is free. Free is free. And the banners are only there to promote the other games, they arent popups, and there is only one on screen at a time.

They are really annoying because its half the reason that everyone gets drawn away from certain games, and also the reason some people complain about lag. The really greatly detailed ones dl for like 2+ minutes straight and everyone goes complaining about lag, when it isnt my fault its just that damn banner ads.
|
What? I don't see how those banners could ever seriously lag someone. Do you remember which image it was that was so big to cause something? I started poking about for random banners and the largest one I had found was Failed Fate at roughly 50 kilobytes, and even when I was on a 56K I never had problems with banners lagging me.
Even if it was caused by banners, I don't see how everyone playing a game would be affected by it. Not everyone sees the same banner at the same time so someone could be loading the 50 kilobyte banner while someone else may have picked up something very tiny like Scream of the Stickster, which was about 2.5 kilobytes. |
I dont know but one time a while back I got serious lag from it dling a banner, and it was extremely annoying.
|
One time? Your basing your want of a new development suite for BYOND without banner adds on one single freaken instance of lag?
|
I used to have problems with the banners, but that was before there was a filesize limit. Even 56k connections won't be slowed down for very long by a 10KB file.
|
The point is that they are annoying, and there can still be problems with them, Last Month I had problems with them when I was over my Aunts with her Dial-Up. Im not saying that its super lag and stuff, but it is quite annoying when they dl and people yell at me about lag when they are dling, and there aint [nuttin] I can do about it.
