Once a problem is solved in either Developer How-to/Code Problems, the author could click a "Solved" button. This would turn the thread a different colour and lock it from further posts. This way people wouldn't waste time checking threads to see if they needed help, and newbies could look up solutions to problems by looking for coloured threads.

Lock the thread wouldn't be good, because people can always add on.

I don't like the idea of locking it, because someone could think their problem was solved and click the button. A random passerby might notice that the code in question would only work under certain circumstances, but he wouldn't be able to post. It's probably best to just add "solved" to the topic yourself unless there is going to be a way to only look at unsolved problems.

I like the idea of having a "Solved" indicator, and I believe it's been brought up in the past; but there's no need to lock the thread.
