BYOND Members now have the ability to add "contributors" to their site. A contributor can make blog posts to the site. Only BYOND Members can be contributors, and at this time they can only make blog posts and don't have access to any other aspect of the site.

While people can use this how they will, the general intent of the feature is to allow group-based blogs for various purposes. As an example, Guy is planning to have a BYONDscape World Service blog, where a set of regular contributors will be able to post items. The DDT will use this to have an official DDT blog that is separate from our personal sites.

I suspect that the community will come up with some clever additional uses that we haven't thought of yet...
How about "sub-blogs"? :p

How come non-members cannot be a contributer? I'd like for some of my friends to use my blog but are not byond members. Or what If I wanted to post under an alternative key? Thats no fair. Will this be changed in the future or no chance?

Deadron, do you have the ability to post theese updates in the Announcements?

I still think it's a great idea.
But it would be nice for them to be moved to a section where I can actually see whats been updated.

No chance, that would remove one of the main points to buying a membership, which wouldn't be good for us!

I won't go quite that far. We discussed this, with opinions on both sides of the question, and decided we want to start out membership-only. We'll re-evaluate the policy over time to see if BYOND would be best served by a different model.

Stop asking for more. =P
We should be happy they even gave us blogs in the first place.

I do. To be honest, I wasn't sure these changes warranted a bigger announcement. I'm happy about them, but don't know how much others will use them.

And another point to consider is that by posting them here, you encourage discussion. :P Whether that's a check in the plus or minus column is a matter of opinion... :P

I'm all in favor of keeping it members only at first... you can very easily add in non-member posts later, but if you add them and it doesn't work out and then try to take them away... well, nobody likes summer re-runs.

It wouldn't affect my decision to buy membership(s) (three so far... see my members page if you want to get one of the next two), but I really think the more non-essential "extras" members can be given exclusively, the more desirable it will be. However, in this case, I could see the contributor feature encouraging more... by giving people a taste of one of the cooler features that's likely to be highly undervalued by new users.

The fact that somebody else gets to control page layout and content and could delete their posts or revoke their status at any time would make it a "lesser tier" than actual memberhood.

Such announcements will be handled on the BYOND blog hereafter...that will feed the automated news thingie, and be a place where people can comment on announcements, solving many things at once!

I agree with the rest of what you said...in the face of uncertainty, we decided it was best to start out with the restriction and see how things seem to go.

Or, you know, you could make sub-blogs to make it so we can have like, 2 sections of our blogs.
