Am I the only one who thinks that charging people to use the pager was a very brave move by BYOND and could actually have ended up shooting themselves in the foot. I Used to play byond (in a different key) and can remember when the online games where in the 100's-300's and online players where around 600-800+(maybe exaggerated a bit there) and have noticed the gradual decay and decline of the number of players on byond. But none so much as now when they charge for the pager. It used to be the only good way to communicate to someboady on a game if they were busy, but now you have to subscribe for something, that frankly, isnt worth $15 (in my eyes anyway). It was a fun way to communicate to players and create a friendly environment among players (I'll admit, SOME used it to SPAM but not everyone). What do the rest of you think? Am i just rambling and complaining, or do I have a point?

It only takes one idiot to ruin something for everyone.

If it isn't worth $15 to you, why are you even bothering to rant about it? And again, if it isn't worth $15, why should Dantom spend thousands from their own pockets just for people who don't think that the pager is worth $15 to them? Every other point you make, and more, has been discussed thoroughly many times on the forums. A simple search will provide reasons/answers. |
the point was they could have done soooo much more to make people get memberships. And was also to say if other people thought taking the pager away for a price would just make BYOND more unpopular with new gamers. Clearly you missed the point entirely and should read through carefully. It was all there all you had to do was read.

No, there were heck of alot people complaining about this. And the charge isn't only for the pager, but also for other features, did you even read the anouncement? I Used to play byond (in a different key) and can remember when the online games where in the 100's-300's and online players where around 600-800+(maybe exaggerated a bit there) and have noticed the gradual decay and decline of the number of players on byond. But none so much as now when they charge for the pager. The people who left are people who're to stupid to realise that the BYOND staff can't go on paying the server themselves, so they removed the pager for non-paying members. And gave paying BYONDers a few (nice) features. I don't understand why you're complaining.. It used to be the only good way to communicate to someboady on a game if they were busy, but now you have to subscribe for something, that frankly, isnt worth $15 (in my eyes anyway). It may be in your eyes, but there are people in this community who actually can think. So they realise that it's worth the pager, the BLOG and all other features. Only one opinion won't change the BYOND staff's mind. I hope you realise that. It was a fun way to communicate to players and create a friendly environment among players (I'll admit, SOME used it to SPAM but not everyone). What do you understand with "some"? In this case "some" were about 100+ people who kept being annoying and spamming everyone that annoys them. That spamming sucks up alot of bandwith, and bandwith sucks up money. What do the rest of you think? Am i just rambling and complaining, or do I have a point? It's very clearly, you're bragging nonsense. EDIT: Woops! Saw a few typos Fixxed! (spelt wrong on purpose) EDIT 2: Also one more thing: There are a zillion(sarcasm) free messaging programs out there, way better than the pager. Why on earth do you prefer the pager? For example download MSN or AIM, etc.. O-matic |
The only reason I missed your point was because you never made it clear. All you said was: the number of players and the number of live games has decreased and that the pager made it easy to communicate and charging $15 for it isn't worth it. My point was that if you'd bother to search the forum, everything you've said has already been discussed in detail.

1)Yeah, i did realise that my opinion wouldnt change the admins minds (nor would expect it to) I just thought I would get my point over.
2)No I didnt read the announcement I have been busy and have only recently started to play BYOND again. 3)Basically I couldnt be assed reading through tons of pages about this topic, I just thought id start a new thread. It worked. 4)I have AIM and MSN, but not everyone else does, and I liked the pager cuz it was right there and you didnt really have to go in depth, you cud just ask a quick question while still watch and play the game. 5)I do understand that BYOND have to pay for their servers, BUT i dont think making the pager no longer free would make people want to pay for BYOND. Despite all this i'm just gonna go ahead and contradict myself (as I am considering donating to BYOND) The point of this was to get the feedback from other people and see what they thought about the pager idea. |

Good 2)No I didnt read the announcement I have been busy and have only recently started to play BYOND again. You really should, you've missed alot of info. 3)Basically I couldnt be assed reading through tons of pages about this topic, I just thought id start a new thread. It worked. So you're filling up the forum space without considering that thsi has been discussed a zillion times? Not very smart.. 4)I have AIM and MSN, but not everyone else does, Then encourage 'everyone else' to download AIM or MSN! and I liked the pager cuz it was right there and you didnt really have to go in depth, you cud just ask a quick question while still watch and play the game. Then become a member if you really want the pager that badly. 5)I do understand that BYOND have to pay for their servers, BUT i dont think making the pager no longer free would make people want to pay for BYOND. You completely missed the point. The pager was a problem for the BYOND staff, it sucked up to much bandwith, it isn't removed because the reason wich you mentioned, that'd be extremely silly. The point of this was to get the feedback from other people and see what they thought about the pager idea. You should've known that this is going to cause flame wars. A forum search would be very simple and easier instead of posting a new post. You just don't realise how much people have been complaining about the changes.. A forum search will show you what I mean. O-matic |

the point was they could have done soooo much more to make people get memberships. If you have any suggestions, we'd love to hear them. We've spent months working out the details of this, and one of the biggest sticking points is that it can't cost more money than it brings in. So we can't offer $25 worth of services for a $15 membership. All suggestions are welcome, and if you think you have something that we can offer affordably and will attract more members, please suggest away. :) |
Perhaps possibly, a somewhat reasonable file hosting size upgrade for some extra money(on the members behalf)?

No, you're not the only one who thinks that. However, the word "thinks" is a bit stretched there. I Used to play byond (in a different key) and can remember when the online games where in the 100's-300's and online players where around 600-800+(maybe exaggerated a bit there) and have noticed the gradual decay and decline of the number of players on byond. This is a mistaken impression, and you're not the first to have it. Basically everyone who's noticed a drop in players has been looking at the wrong time of day. Also, school has started up for many BYOND users. The fact that its spam potential is so much lower now means it's also an even friendlier environment for players than before. What do the rest of you think? Am i just rambling and complaining, or do I have a point? You don't have a point--and wouldn't, even if you were correct in the belief that we'd lost a significant number of players. The ones we would lose would be mostly the ones who contribute nothing anyway, and would include an above average number of trolls. So really it's a win-win here. Lummox JR |
Make a special Unpublished Games section for unpublished games by Members. It's cheap, and it's a decent way to cull
all of the rubbish games out of the current Unpublished Hub. Pretty please. With sugar on top. No? With Splenda on top? All God's chillun's on a diet! |
Hey I never thought of that idea, but it works! I don't think the unpublished games by members would be very large though, would it? Wouldn't it be like "Unpublished games by members: 11" and "Unpublished games by non-members: 126
