So I call this page a "developer's journal", although I haven't done much journalling about the behind the scenes production of the game. Better late than never!
Today's big challenge was the character creation system. I already had the design in my head and sketched out what it would look like... but seeing it all come together this afternoon was pretty cool. I'm going to refrain from posting a screenshot of it however, because I'd like to have a few surprises left when the game is finally released.
It's essentialy a graphical menu (onscreen) that allows you to scroll through different options for your character's hair, facial hair, hair color and skin color. As usual, this system works pretty much the same way as in games like World of Warcraft.
As of right now, I have 10 different styles of hair, 5 different types of facial hair, 11 colors for hair and 5 different skin tones. If you do the math, that means that there are 2750 unique combinations; and that isn't even counting female characters and their hair types. That number will go through the roof when I add in more hair styles etc. before the game is released.
If there is one thing people crave in online games, it's having a unique character. Taking into account all of the different possible colors/combinations of clothing for your character, there will be unlimited options for customization.

(DWO didn't really count; it was an RPG, but it was a fangame!) It being a fangame doesn't make it any less of a game. :'( |
Yeah, well my character creation system has 16777216 different hair colours and 16777216 different clothing colours, making a total of 281,474,976,710,656 different possible combinations! Beat that! =P
(Sure, most of those are just indistinguishable shades of the other ones, and most of the rest clash horribly, but that's not the point. =D) Hair styles, now there's an idea... |
Oh, sure Crispy, that is, if you want a medieval knight having bright cyan hair and pepto-bismol pink armor. =P
|
Crispy, i chould make something with over 100 billion combos. its not rlly that hard. all you need is more then 10 colorable things, gui color thingie, and some faces and shit like that.
|
Rizendemons sucks a Gunz.
/offtopic But yea, I think the more combinations the better. I hate seeing lots of people dressed the same. =( |
Well, I'd assume there will be cloaks, armor, pants, shoes, hats, and such in all sorts of different colors. But nothing to an eye-burning extreme.
EDIT: As long as there's the traditional Wizard ponytail+beard combo, I'll be happy. |

I actually do intend to restrict the colour choices in future. The current system is just there to make sure that the colouring all works. :-)
|
Restrict color choices, heh.
"Hmm...sky blue and...magenta!" *Sorry, you can't use that combination, it, like, TOTALLY doesn't match* |
I can't wait to see this game in action. As I always do in any RPG, I will probably end up remaking my character a dozen or so times.

Damn, I was susposed to be taking a break from BYOND! Now I am itching to work on Ilithyia's upcoming rpg. Nice job Silk.
Now when Katie asks why I am busy, I will surely blame you :P |
